Gear box worn out, whats a good replacement?

I need a new gear box, and all I can think of is Checkers, Autozone, Napa. Are there any more choices? I don't trust Autozone's, and Checkers and Napa both use A-1 Cardone, which isn't much better. Any help?

It's nearly impossible to wear out a gearbox. They are rebuildable in nay case. Most of the time they just need to be adjusted.

I assume its worn out. First, its really sloppy, but yes, I did adjust it. Second, it turns to the left normally, but to the right, very-very easy, like a luxury car.

Rebuild it. You'd be surprised. The rebuild kit comes with the sealing rings for the spool valve.

Did you adjust the worm shaft preload (the one around the steering column)? or only the Pitman shaft preload (the one in the cover)?

I've rebuilt 2 of the ones in my current cars; the one in my 83 Z28 which has about 315,000 miles on it, and the one in my 78 El Camino which has about 342,000 miles. Both drive like brand new, maybe better. If ones with that kind of mileage can be refreshed, yours probably can too.

Thanks RB, I think I'll give it a try. After all, I've heard of nothing but bad luck from rebuilt one's. By the way, I adjusted the pitman arm one I guess, the one with the nut and screw on top, didn't know about the one on the steering shaft side.

Know of a good kit? Brand/part number perhaps?

Don't recall a part #, seems like I got it at NAPA... the same kit fits an enormous number of applications, the gears are pretty much all the same inside as far as the kits are concerned, so it shouldn't be too tough to get the right one. All it has is several O-rings, the lip seals for the worm and the Pitman shafts, and the sealing rings for the spool valves and the big piston thing.

You might want to get a book of some sort that has it in it if you don't already have one, for blowup diagrams and such. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to do the job if you have a good set of tools. You'll need about a 1/8" punch, and some way to pull the Pitman arm. It doesn't take much else.

Powercraft #8122, if not try 8155
This is the rebuild kit with seals and bearings.
There are other kits that only have seals.
