Tie rod problem

I am having tie rod to wheel clearance issues. Stock tie rods and Racecraft drop spindles. Just like the guy in this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/susp...clearance.html
My question is, would it be okay to mount the tie rod on the top side of the steering arm? I have a bump steer kit, and I would drill the hole in the steering arm straight in order to use a plain bolt. Anyone see any issues with this?

Re: Tie rod problem

yes, you would have terrible bump-steer that way.

how much more clearance do you need? can you get away with a small spacer, or grinding the spindle a little?

Re: Tie rod problem

I forgot to mention that I swapped to a rack and pinion. And I'm currently re-positioning it, so bump steer wouldn't be an issue...i should be able to bet all the angles right.

are you using the drop spindles with the shortened steering arm or the regular ones?

Re: Tie rod problem

Short steering arm spindles. As long as it won't hurt anything to have the tie rods on top, I'll mount my rack a little higher in order to combat the bump steer.

for the sake of knowing, what size wheels are you using?

Re: Tie rod problem

18s currently...19s might clear. But it looks like putting the tie rod on top is going to work. At ride height, the tie rod is level with the current rack mounting. I'm still going to build a new bracket just to be safe.

Re: Tie rod problem

this is good to know, i had though about the idea of using these spindles, with the shortened arms just for the sake of wheel clearance, so i could still use a wider front wheel, but since you have problems with an 18" wheel and clearance, and thats what i was planning to use, i know to steer clear of these and stick with plan "B".

Sucks you are having issues, hopefully you can get it all resolved and keep proper geometry by flipping the steering arm.

Re: Tie rod problem

Ive got those spindles with stock steering and 18" c6 wheels with 1.75" spacers in the front. I had to grind on the tie rod ends just a bit.

Don't rule it out yet. In my case, it was an easy fix. Just flip the tie rod over. But my car is really low, so I think that helped out a little.

Which spindles? Long steering arm, or short?

Racecraft drop spindles for stock steering and stock steering.
