Air bag suspension

Has anyone here put air bags on there car? Ive been thinking about it because they are effectivly "hydraulics that dont break every week."

The install looks fairly straight forward.

Just wonder what, if any, issuse have come up during the instalation.

You need to fabricate your own system. An f-body suspension isn't designed properly from the factory to use air bag suspension. The unibody construction puts all the mount point in the wrong places.

There's nothing saying that it can't be done but you need to build and fabricate your own system for it to work.

There are air bags available to fit inside the rear springs. They are just air bag helper springs and not a true air suspension. Drag racers use them a lot to fine tune the rear suspension.

Search through the archives. The topic has come up before.

I've only found them for the rear end. I emailed an airbag company but they didn't even email me back. It shouldn't be too hard to replace your springs with airbags, keep looking.

currently there isn't a straight forward setup, there are a few companies (firestone & air-ride) to name a few that make things that will work but it requires extensive moding that can't be done in the average drive way. expect to pay around $ 1400 just for the parts and then most guys will charge another grand for install......after you see what's involved you might change your mind.

although there are some ways around this that are cheaper; but i'm not going to be the one to suggest it good luck.

i know this is a old post but they do make airbag kits for camaros and with all kits you have to do a lil of your own fabrication. I heard that the front air bag brackets are the same used for a 2WD S 10.

There are a couple guys on this board that have done it. There is a big post on here somewhere. Keep checking back too. I've got a good start on my air ride system going on my Camaro. I'll post on here when I get it done.

I have seen airbag front struts for 4th gen's what is the the differance and what could be done to make them work. And for the rear that would be easy.

Easy Street and MIC (Master Image Customs) make kits for 3rd gens I believe. Or you can fab your own brackets and use the industry standard parts. Look for the member "LowCamaro". He made his own setup himself for pretty cheap!

back when the topic started they didn't have strut bags and the ones they first came out with had huge problems with tearing. now that they have the double and soon to be tripple bags they are much more durrable, stable, and user friendly. there are alot of companies making setups that will work with our cars but like mentioned above only a few sell acutal kits for our cars.

i've been trying to decide between chasis tech and air ride tech. once the tripple strut comes out i plan to put them on mine as well. after driving one on the road and seeing how they work at the strip i don't mind loosing a .1 or .2 to have a fully adjustable suspension. the hardest part for me is wether i want to use standard bag setup in the stock spring location or keep my coilover setup and run the strut bags up front and the standard bags in the rear.

you also have the options of running double lines and secondary canisters so that the car can react better when taking turns. they seem to handle just as good as the stock setup but with complete adjustment.

dont bother with chassis tech...im big into minitruckin and from the parts i've seen at the shop i used to work at and from customer expierience..chassis tech sucks..air ride all the way..they make they're kits soooo easy to install..plus they put alot more time and development into their products...all the wiring and stuff for my sdyme was simple plug n play..like a big wiring harness..jus my 2 cents

Air Ride Technologies is definitely the company doing all of the R&D. I’ve talked to a couple reps that have been very helpful in picking out my components. They are working on a kit for our cars right now. They are planning on using the struts instead of using the spring location. I’m not sure why. They already do make a kit for the rear since it is the same as the fourthgens. I am using the stock spring locations and fabing my own brackets.

they already have the struts out now....they may not package the kit but the parts are there. this type of things isn't something you would want to buy in a package anyhow seeing as the price would surely rise.

i would think "idealy" the stock front spring location would be the most stable and support the rapid changes easier. however the double and tripple strut bags are pretty supportive as well.

it would be nice to see someone running the strut bags up front to get a personal account of the matter.

I agree that Chassis Tech is evil. They are a sub company of AIM, which is pretty much the APC of the trucking scene. When I was dropping my S10 (sold now), I ordered Chassis Tech parts since they were the cheapest. When I got them in the mail they were missing some parts for one side and the other piece that was complete didnt even fit my truck! And thats how I began my exciting adventure with the Chassis Tech support. I ended up going with Belltech parts, definately high quality, and was very happy. Air Ride tech the whole way. If you want specific answers from an Air Ride tech guy without sending an email or picking up the phone, check out the boards @ www.sportruck.com in the suspension forums. They answer all kinds of questions on those forums.

Look for good things to come from ChassisTech- They have a new chief Engineer in design -that I happen to know VERY well.

Its my kid brother's best friend- Ryan has top notch skills fabricating suspension. He has done countless things for me on many different vehicles in the past out of his garage at home. This kid is bigtime into quality and hopes to change Chassistechs reputation.
