brakes for a Dana 44
brakes for a Dana 44
I just bought a Dana 44 rear from SLP and am in need of some disk brakes. I have a few questions. Can I put rear brakes from a 96 Trans Am on this rear? If not, What brakes work? What do I need from the donor car? Please help as the rear will be here in a week. thanks

The Dana 44 takes the same backing plates as the 10 bolt, so you should be able to do it with no trouble.
I got the rear and I have a set of '86 disc and a set of '86 drums and neither one fits. both of the backing plates are different. The holes do not line up for the disc and the drum appears completely different. Anyone have any ideas? The disc appear close, and almost look the same as the axle end, but it just will not work. Thanks for any input before I have to go buy Baer brakes.

Have you tired asking SLP what they recommend?
I'd think you need to go with a 4th gen. rear brake set up but don't quote me on that.

You might already have 89+ backing plates? On SLP's website they recommend use Baer brakes.
Are 12 bolt and 10 bolt axle flanges the same? From Wilwoods site the flange measures exactly like they show a 12 bolt. I have tried for get a hold of SLP but they are closed for the holidays. When I questioned the "sales expert" about the brakes he said I could use my old drums, but I do not see how that would work. He then gave me the number to Baer and told me to call them. I asked about Baer p/n but he said he did not know. I was hoping to put the rear on over the holidays. Anybody know anything different?

I'm not sure, but regardless, it IS possible to put your 86 brakes on if you have the right backing plate. The Dana 44 in my car has them.
I've got some 10 bolt backing plates around here somewhere, I'll measure them if I can find them and compare.

The Baer catalog lists the same kits for Saginaw w/OE rear disc (10-bolt diff cover) & GM Performance Parts Dana 44 conversion rear ends. P/N E4GF-10601-5DN for the rear Touring kit w/ 12" rotors for, or P/N E4GF-10661-5KN for the Touring+ kit with 13.25" rotors.
That is exactly what the axle flange is like. Thanks apeiron for posting the drawing. Is this a stock axle flange, maybe from a 90 and up Camaro? Does anyone know if the 98 and up Camaro's have the same axle flange? I was thinking of putting some newer LS1 brakes on the car.
I am really trying not to have to get the Baer brakes. I would rather try to get some GM parts as I undersatnd most of the Baer equipment is GM anyway.
I am not sure the axle end that SLP puts on the rears is stock 10 bolt GM. I am getting cash poor buying parts two and three times for the "money pit" I like to call my hobby. Thanks for all of the reply's.

It's a 12 bolt flange in the drawing, I just stuck it up there so I don't have to go looking for it again when I find my backing plates to measure.

Ok... I found my plates... The 10 bolt disc flange does have the same bolt pattern as the 12 bolt flange shown in the picture, with about a 2 7/8" center hole.
I thought I had pictures showing the differences between the backing plates for the PBR and the Moraine calipers, but it turns out I don't. The plate I'm holding in my hand right now is for the PBR calipers, and the mounting hole centers for the caliper bracket are about 3 13/16" apart, and are about 4 1/8" from the axle center.
