Is using a rod end in place of a stock style outer tie rod end a bad idea? I called QA1 and they said do not do it, camaro central.com said do not do it (couldn't provide any reasons why not to) and FK who manufacturers rod ends told me "I cant tell you what you can or cannot do" basically covering themselves for liability purposes but did go on to say that it is not an uncommon practice. Baer and other companies bump steer kits are rod ends... I do probably 10 road course races a summer, so it definitely sees some abuse. Any thoughts? (obviously i'd buy top of the line..stainless steel heat treated etc)
Very common, however they are going to have a rough life, so they will wear out. I have them on both my cars and have had no issues at all, even on my 92 which I DD when its not snowing
My bump steer kit uses rod ends but also doesn't see the abuse of street use or road course racing. If you replace the rod ends every couple of years with a good quality rod end (not some cheap offshore part) then you should be fine.
I appreciate the responses, i'll give it a go. 86, you have a picture of your set up? I was thinking i'd do a female rod end at the spindle and then run a length of threaded rod to the stock adjuster sleeve, using a jam nut to secure the rod at the rod end? It looks like there's a couple ways it could be done but wasn't sure which was best.
I just using heavy wall swadged tube and a male end. Eliminating the stock adjuster. I think the tube is 9" long. 5/8 18. Rod end is right hand thread. Then you wil need the proper tapered stud for.the stering arm connection.

I have the Spohn bump steer kit and it works well even on the street and it turns much better when going over uneven roads and potholes.

I followed Twin_Turbo and 86TAs lead and put my own set together. Search for my name and I have a post out there with the list of parts needed to put it together. I have not finished putting my car back together, but I am assuming it will work just fine.
