Steering problems. HELP! please

Hey Guys Greetings from across the pond (uk)

Ok here goes, 91 Z28 350 tpi. Start the car turn the wheel to the left no problem but trying to turn to the right and its incredibly hard, I mean hang off it hard. Give it a little gas and it will turn fine, driving is ok turns left and right but take your foot of the gas and now and again it gets stiff BUT only to the right. I have replaced the pump and it has plenty of fluid. There is a slight fluid leak but tiny. anyone got any ideas or suffered the same problem. Manythanks.

Good morning. Always nice to hear from third gen owners across the pond.

Two things come to mind. Could the caster be split L to R? If you are cruising and let go of the wheel, does it pull to one side?

Does it steer right OK when stopped if you give it gas? I'm wondering if there is something wrong in the steering box.

Hi Ramey, Caster split? pass no idea ha ha. If you give it gas at a standstill the wheel will turn freely. As for the box if thats the problem is it a case of pull it strip it and replace any seals and alike because getting a new box is not gonna be easy. Thanks for the help and advice.
Chris.

Re: Steering problems. HELP! please

By caster split I meant 3 degrees on one side and 5 degrees on the other (for example). That might cause it to be hard to steer.

If it turns well with more RPM that makes me think there is something wrong in the pump as far as output volume or pressure goes. Or something wrong in the box itself. Unfortunately that may be difficult to diagnose as to which one...

The pump is brand new because thats what i thought it was but then it didnt change. When you drive it the steering is slightly off centre. Does that help at all?

Have you had the car aligned recently? If you are traveling down a highway does it stay straight if you let go of the steering wheel?

I'm wondering if there is some dirt in the steering box servo.

Re: Steering problems. HELP! please

It was done when the pump was changed. The car has only done a few hundred miles in the last couple of years. I think it pulls slightly to the left. Because of the weather i have not driven the car since last September and now the weather is improving its time to break it out and enjoy it but I want to get it driving right.

Re: Steering problems. HELP! please

well i would think the pump is working fine if it new. hows the fluid? Sounds like its binding? when you turn right. Ill be honest I have no clue id say go get an alignment it may help point out the issue or just get under it while someone turns the wheels and watch that's what i do. It sounds like your steering is worn out somewhere
