How Do You Tell If Your Lower Control Arm Bushings Are Worn?
I'm wondering how you positively verify that the lower control arm bushings are worn and needing replacement?
Any tricks to pulling the control arms off?
Thanks

Yes I assume they are cheap but how involved is the project to pull the lower control arms and reinstall...?

Re: How Do You Tell If Your Lower Control Arm Bushings Are Worn?
I've never removed a front lower control arm on an FBody specifically but until now assumed it involved both specialized tools and a safety issue.
Thanks again! - I always carry a basic set of tools in the back of my car and I have a hammer in a kitchen drawer at home so I just need to pick up a set of bushings.

Yes, there are 2 bolts holding them to the crossmember, but the is also the balljoint and the sway bar end link to remove. Then you have to actually remove the old bushings, and I don't know of anyone on here who used just a hammer to remove or install them. Most people use either a torch to melt them out, or drill a bunch of holes in the rubber and then have to force them out. Then of course you need a press of some sort to get the new ones in. A C clamp type press will work, but its a real PITA to do(been there, done that, never again). Or you can take the arms to a machine shop to replace the bushings for a few more bucks. And there is the major safety issue of being able to compress the coil springs without them flying out and killing you or putting a hole in a cinder block wall. A coil spring compressor and shop press are not what I consider "basic" tools(although I do own both).
Not trying to be an a$$, I just don't want the OP thinking it can be done with a hammer and a few sockets.

The A-Arms will most likely have to be removed imo.
And yes you will be dealing with the spring and the danger involved with that.
Since you'd be in there you could also look at replacing the ball joints, strut mounts, struts etc.
If you mean the rear LCA's, you could support the rear end and attempt to unbolt them. Sometimes the bolts rusts to the inside of the bushing making it difficult to remove. That actually goes for the A-Arms as well.

Re: How Do You Tell If Your Lower Control Arm Bushings Are Worn?
Are you talking about the front a arms or rear lower control arms ?
Fronts you just need you basic ratchet set 2 jacks one to raise car
Once remove the wheel place 2nd jack to raise front a arm , get a ball joint remover to remove spindle from a arm , lower jack to relieve pressure on spring then remove it I use a crow bar , then remove a arm bolts might need hammer to tap out
Take to local shop to press out and press in bushings
Can get general idea looking at pics

Re: How Do You Tell If Your Lower Control Arm Bushings Are Worn?
Lol my bad I thought he has talking about the lower rear control arm
I usually call the front lower A Arm
I should of clarified that
I used crow bar, balljoint remover fork , 2 ratchet , 2 sockets don't know the mm off top of my head , 2 jacks, and hammer , and a press or take to local shop
And 2 jacks to support car
Pretty much same for the rear but rear is a lot easier
Lower Control Arm is pretty Vague

Re: How Do You Tell If Your Lower Control Arm Bushings Are Worn?
No I meant 1 jackSTAND ..BAZINGA !!! lol
Yea 2 jack stands to support the car
Been long days and couple of months for me with my deployment work up ,the long days will get to you. Just got off 24 hour duty and still had to work today sigh
Don't beat me up lol
all in all its pretty simple task front or rear bushings
No need for crazy to old most can be rented from local auto store and with any old car it's good idea to have mechanic tool set at least
