changing rear shocks

hi guys, I am new to any kind of suspension work on my car but have tinkered under the hood for a while.

can someone give me a quick walk through on how to change the rear shocks on my 89 formula? 9 bolt borg warner rear and disk brakes

it seems as easy as just jacking the car up by the differential, unbolting the nuts under the carpet inside, and underneath and switching the shock...is that all there is to it?

also open to suggestions on what brands are good

Re: changing rear shocks

Sounds right, its very easy. Jack stands are the safe way to go.

Re: changing rear shocks

I put the 'Gas a Just" on mine = http://www.kyb.com/

And new 5665 MOOG springs
The ride is a little stiff but that's what I wanted.
KYB = http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ky...model/firebird

Re: changing rear shocks

got it thanks...these are definitely a little pricier than the monroe sensa-trac i can get my hands on...are the KYBs really going to be worth it? what difference will i notice?

also there are so many KYB models, what if i just wanted a standard one lol? how could i tell which i need?

Re: changing rear shocks

This would be KYBs answer to a stock replacement for your car. Still better made than the other discount brands.
Summit has nice pricing and free shipping with usually a 10.00 handling fee but no tax.
At least that's how they treat me.

Here's one of the differences between the twin tube Excel-G and the mono tube "Gas a Just" design.
The "Gas a Just" is a little stiff so you might like the Excel-G.

I see that the Monroe Sensa-Trac is a mono tube design for around $ 25.00. ????
There's even a Monroe mono tube design for $15.00. ????

Re: changing rear shocks

I'm selling my kyb gas a just rear shocks off my firebird. They have like 500 miles on them. Selling them for like 1/2 what they are worth. Shoot me a PM if interested. They are a step up from KYB GR2 and much better than the soft mushy monroes. They have higher pressure than the GR2s. Only selling them bc I'm going coil overs in the rear.
