QA1 Rear Coil Overs - Tech Specs?

http://www.spohn.net/shop/1982-1992-...le-Shocks.html

Like others, once lowered, not much shock travel w/#200 springs. Noticed some oil leakage. They will have to be rebuilt.

Tried several people for lowering brackets on axle side. All said they could do it, then went busy/dark. Maybe this is not the best remedy, anyway.

Since they have to be rebuilt, what can be done to them? Can the piston rod be shortened? Anyone know the current length?
What re-valve specs should I be looking for? Rebuild alone is $90/shock. I'm willing to spend some money to get it right, just don't know shock tech innards.

Does my new 12 bolt change specs, also?

Re: QA1 Rear Coil Overs - Tech Specs?

Spohn told me that these are DS703, and have a collapsed 13" with extended 19.5" height, and a 12" spring. That's all I could get from them.
Waiting on QA1 to respond. It's a custom shock not listed on website.

They are also revalvable and rebuildable - so I need application specific tech specs to give to re-builder.

Re: QA1 Rear Coil Overs - Tech Specs?

QA1 called within an hour!
The Spohn DS703 has a 16" range.
The DS603 has a range of 15.25".
Current ride height is 14.5" measured today (and the collapsed height is 13" - duh).
The 603 might work (12.5" collapsed not big improvement), but still checking on custom rebuild of 703, and other options yet unkown.
A 503 is a different animal, but has better numbers.

Re: QA1 Rear Coil Overs - Tech Specs?

This thread seems to be a monologue, but I did dialogue with DSE on their new JRi rear coil overs.
Compressed - 12", extended 17". That would put the stroke range at 14.5". That's a .5" better on collapsed height than the DS603(12.5/18.75)...hmmm

Do you know if QA1 shocks have a internal floating piston?

Re: QA1 Rear Coil Overs - Tech Specs?

I don't think so, but not positive.

Naake said: To use DS703 shocks, you would need to relocate your shocks mounts to accommodate an installed height of 16”-16.75” or you would need shorter shocks. A DS501 is recommended for ride heights between 13.25” – 14.5”.

Your DS703 shocks came in a kit and have mounts specific to your car. You should be able to use all the mounting hardware from your kit with the DS501 shocks.
DS501 does takes a 12” spring.

Cost of DS501 is $158. per shock.

Not sure what the difference is in 03 and 01 ending designations for QA1.
Checking on Varishock vas 11111-515 and also 615

Will a Viking shock fit?
They (the company) are refugees from QA1.
Have them on my car, but not as coil overs. Ride height never an issue.
Actually just raised my car some, along with a couple of other things. The end result is a much better handling car. You don't need to be slammed.

Re: QA1 Rear Coil Overs - Tech Specs?

The last digit designations refer to mounting hardware. Sharon (Naake) said to let her know, they'll modify for me so all the hardware fits.
I'm not quite slammed - front fender lip 25.75, rear 27.5 in this pic as it sits now. Rake is from the new 12 bolt, and I thought I wouldn't touch it till I knew what I am going to do. I must have picked up .75 from the 12 bolt as I have not messed with the settings, just bolted them back on.
So if I drop .5 in back and come up .25 in front, I'll have my desired 1" rake with plenty clearance for surprises. I do have drop spindles!
Varishocks look like both options are just not optimal height.

Re: QA1 Rear Coil Overs - Tech Specs?

I have the same kit from spohn, I actually had 2 kits for a while. I made pretty simple relocation brackets for each car. One bolts to the factory shock mount and triangulates back to the control am mounting bolt. The other bolts onto a moser 9" control arm relocation bracket and holds the shock. Both worked fine, but honestly thus setup is far from ideal for this cars stock mounting points. Not enough room really and you end up with shocks on a pretty steep rearward angle to keep them from rubbing the axle tubes.

I returned to weight jacks on my 92 and never looked back.

Re: QA1 Rear Coil Overs - Tech Specs?

Yeah, I looked for awhile at brackets; finally convinced myself that getting the correct shock is important, rather than fitting the car to a shock.
I'll order the DS501 in a week or so.
