Anyone tried the Autozone Quick Ratio Steering Box?

These guys are the only ones that have the fast ratio box:

http://www.autozone.com/suspension-s...32_0_6207_2374

I know these places sell lower quality parts but between rebuilding my own box and throwing in one of these, I am tempted to try one of these.

I would make sure to count the turns when you go to pick it up.

I will but you know, they sell the standard ratio right next to it. Seems like they have it figured out.

I was in the same boat as you. I bought that quick ratio/sport steering 2.5 turns to lock 3 or 4 years ago. I haven't had any issues with it. I wasn't and still am not interested in paying $500 or $700 for an aftermarket piece that would have a short or iffy warranty. I understand that some of their parts are poor quality but their suspension/steering parts are usually stock quality. I know for a fact that when I was a manager there they had Timken and Moog making some of their parts.

Thanks! That's an informed endorsement for sure.

Well I just ordered it. Man, great price. $125 then I got 20% off promo for shipping to my house and free shipping for over $100. Just over $100 total. We will see how it goes.

Re: Anyone tried the Autozone Quick Ratio Steering Box?

Only reason I mentioned checking the turns is that Ive seen where people have got them mixed up before. Just might save you some time on a return trip. The next box might be right.

Ive screwed up too many times in the past by not double checking before I left.

Don't really matter much when ordering online. Hard to beat those discount codes. Let us know what you think. Im tempted to take the same route.

Re: Anyone tried the Autozone Quick Ratio Steering Box?

The reason you never know what you're really getting from the parts store, is because of core returns. Say some guy with a 6cyl Camaro wants a quick ratio Z28 box. He buys the better box, turns in his 6cyl box as the core. Rebuilder gets the core as a quick ratio box, sends it out as a quick ratio box, but it's not a quick ratio box. Multiply by thousands because the same basic box is used in a few dozen GM platforms, and magazines have been talking about the thirdgen quick ratio box for decades, and you really don't know what you're getting.

Re: Anyone tried the Autozone Quick Ratio Steering Box?

I've gone through and tested boxes from Autozone, Advance Auto, Napa, and online sources and for the most part you don't get the right part in the box (I never managed to find the right one, even from the $$$ places like AGR, I finally ended up rebuilding my own).

Some of that info is here in this thread:

I thought I checked it when I installed it, I'll check tonight and report back. Maybe I have a standard old gear box.

Re: Anyone tried the Autozone Quick Ratio Steering Box?

Checked the steering box, it is a quick ratio 2.5 turns lock to lock. It was the first one I got.

Re: Anyone tried the Autozone Quick Ratio Steering Box?

I have heard of people buying the quick ratio box and getting the regular one as well. I'll be following this thread because my brother has a 92 camaro rs with the regular box and it feels so unresponsive compared to my ws6 trans am with the quick ratio box. I don't think I could own one of these cars without putting one in.
