Broken rear upper strut mount
84 Trans Am. The rear upper strut mount has broken off or poked through the unibody. Web searches have not reviled any useful fixes. I was hoping to find a brace to have welded on. Any ideas on how to repair this?

Re: Broken rear upper strut mount
There's no struts back there; only shocks.
That aside, it happens all the time. No telling how many of these cars are actually driving around like that. It's basically inevitable; and the better you maintain the shocks, the more likely it is to happen. After all, if the shocks are the usual wore-out stock limp-d*** crap that most cars have, they don't ever put any force on anything anyway.
The cure is acoupla big thick washers welded on, one inside the car and one on the underside. Fender washers with a hole the same dia as the hole in the original sheet metal which if memory serves is about 5/8" or ¾", and near about 2" in dia, work great. Extreme precision is not required.

Thanx for that. It had poked through some year ago and I did the washer thing. So it looks like I'll need some local fabrication help to bolster that area up!

Re: Broken rear upper strut mount
just patching it doesnt fix the issue. if your going to patch it you should spread the load out on the area some and actually repair the problem, otherwise it just happens again at the least oportune time. seems like a combination of the two washers and the sheet would work best to keep it from happening again if you were just gonna patch it
