So I'm just getting my front suspension back together. Running a 1" extended ball joint, and at the moment, still running the 16" stock Irocs. I've read up a bit on tie rod clearance issues with wider wheels. On 8" wide stockers, it's not an issue, but with the common aftermarket 9" width (or bigger) you hit the tie rod, unless....you're running an 18" diameter, in which case the tie rod actually sits inside the wheel. What I can't understand is why the extended ball joint makes a difference? If the whole spindle moves up, including the wheel, then so does the tie rod end. ??? I don't have specific measurements, but I paid close attention to the wheel/tie rod relationship before the ball joint swap and after, and they appear to be more less in the same spot. -yet there are several threads and discussions referencing clearance issues. The common solution is either an 8" width, or an 18" diameter.
OK, I had thought about that. Lots of interesting, as well as conflicting info about bump steer with these cars. -But that's another discussion. I can see how the BS kit would create that interference. Maybe that's what the reference was about in those other threads.

Nice acronym.
Years ago I was in a meeting when a high level manager looked at one of the engineering leads and said, "The name for your new system spells ****. Change it."

I'm probably wrong (but will find out soon, I've got 1" ball joints going in my arms and my fronts are 17x9" with 0 offset) and I thought the problem was the ball joints and not the tie rods. The tie rods should move up with the wheel so that should be fine until you get into something like a 16x9 with 0 offset and a fat wheel lip.
Yea, that picture should make it clear that no matter what you do to the balljoint the steering knuckle/tie rod end joint doesn't change location. A BS :P kit does but that is the same change it would make no matter what ball joints you're running.
