Slight but noticable clunk when turning wheel from rest
Slight but noticable clunk when turning wheel from rest
'87 Formula, all bone stock, 46K miles.
Now that I have some time to chase some of the annoying things about an otherwise excellent car... wondering if anyone else has this issue and if you did, what did you do to fix it?
From rest, hot or cold, there is a noticable but very slight metallic 'lunk' in the steering wheel rim for that first bit of turn, left or right.
Many years ago, the tech at the dealer (retired several years ago, unfortunately) said he thought it was probably the center link, that the ends will slightly oval over time and create a bit of lash. He didn't think for the $$$ it would cost that it was worth the spend... but now that I live in an area where the roads are generally quite good, I get to drive the car more often, and hence the backlash is more noticable.
Also recall reading that the chassis bits were from the GM bin in '82, designed for narrow cheap 14" tires, not the bigger 16" 50-series tires, which put a lot more load on the linkage. I have the Astro shaft that will go in this spring/summer, may take a look at any box adjustment, too. Want to wrap all this with one visit, spend the spring with the top down...
Thanks for any insight or links !
