ULTIMATE Idler Arm Test

What idler arm is correct for a 1982-1992 f-body?
Who knows, so I made a video testing as many idler arms as I could find.
Bump steer was tested
& a test on my 3d printed jig
Turns out common knowledge was wrong, or maybe they changed designs over the years.
Make sure to give the video a watch

Re: ULTIMATE Idler Arm Test

Thank you very much! I saw your video yesterday and immediately ordered two MOOG idler arms. I have Proforged on both of my V8 birds and was never really satisfied with them.

Re: ULTIMATE Idler Arm Test

I've always run moog arms but most of my stuff was long before the parts quality dive and parts being misboxed.
nice work on the comparison

Re: ULTIMATE Idler Arm Test

Great video as always!

I had a Spohn Performance steering kit #E-FRTKIT-8292-1, which I realized was all Moog parts!!!
They also use Moog ball joint on their tubular A-Arm.

Good stuff

Peace

Re: ULTIMATE Idler Arm Test

In my auto-x-ing days. I sent an idle arm back to Moog. Had the slightest bit of play. Maybe 1/16". He told me I was nuts, but they stand by their warranty. These days, I probably would not go through the effort.

Re: ULTIMATE Idler Arm Test

This is great information and maybe the place I might get some help. I have issues with wandering going straight and the steering wheel doesn’t return to center on its own when turning, the car is new to me so haven’t had a lot of time to wrench on it. I saw on another thread how aftermarket idler arms are not correct and could be a cause of my issue, I had a look and see my idler arm has 20231003 printed on it, I can find no reference to this and have no idea of the manufacturer, I was going to get an Acdelco part but after seeing this video I’m not sure aftermarket parts are all incorrect. Any ideas of who manufactured this part?

It's hard to say if the idle alarm is your problem or not. Those symptoms could be from a myriad of things.
I typically recommend people just rebuild the front steering. idler arm, center link, and tie rods.
Then replace the factory rag joint steering shaft with a solid Astro shaft.
And if the steering still feels terrible, have the steering box rebuilt by a reputable shop.

Redhead steering does a pretty good job for box rebuilds.
I've been to their shop in Auburn Washington and shot the sh"it with their shop guys.
It was down the street from the Boeing plant I used to work at

I’m really curious as to the number on the idler arm, I can find no reference to it.

Re: ULTIMATE Idler Arm Test

Great video, very informative. Wonder why the Moog had such a bad reputation and consumers like the Proforged?

People tend to parrot opinions that aren't their own.
Happens all the time.
