drop springs vs drop spindles.. lowering questions..
Alrighty guys, i want to redo alot of the front end, and just go all the way. and i want to do a 1-1.5" drop. nothing major, just want the car to handle better and look beter, Ill be doing a little autocrossing this summer each month, but other then that it will be a daily driver until i get a new car..
At first i was thinking about just getting lowering springs, and the positive reasons would be that its cheaper, gives me some negative camber, and allows me to use the STOCK spindles so i can ugrade to 1LE brakes in the future. But there was also quite a few bad things about lowering springs. Decreased suspension travel, more bottoming out, screwing up geometry. So then wouldn't that make it actualy worse for autocrossing, or Id loose whatever i did gain.??
So now im thinking spindles, and after doing some reseach i see that its maybe a better choice for me. Allows me to maintaine correct geometry, alignment, better for daily driving (??) and better performance.. SO what are they negative side effects to getting drop spindles? Will i not be able to do my 1LE brake upgrade???
Thanks guys for all the help..

Also, i thought the minimum drop for spindles was 2 inches... thats an inch or .5 of an inch more than you want. There's a BIG difference. If you'vev ever seen NOSAINTS car its low, its even lower in real life
If he tuck some hydraulics on it he could become a chico and wear a bandana.
The Cost side of it, it's expensive
ITs a BIG install takes time.
If you're taking off the spindles... rebuild the whole front suspension with a pst kit.

with the drop spindles you retain the sotck springs but the car is lowered....lowering springs are harderd to help prevent the bottoming out and when they do, you hit the bump stop....with spinels don't you bottomout more but when you do it is the car hitting the gound not the bump stops.

With shorter springs (lowering springs), I was able to get a bunch more travel by using the Caster/Camber Adjusters from Ground Control Racing. These eliminate the rubber biscuits in the upper strut mount and replaces them with a spherical bearing mounted in aluminum.
Upper strut mounting point is moved up a good inch and a half with these installed.
Also, you have a lot more adjustability.
I've used these for a couple years and they're great. With the 3/4" Thick poly bump stops I have as much travel as I did at stock ride height.
(car is over 2" lower than stock)

Pretty much everything I was going to point out was mentioned:
1) You stated you wanted "nothing major", ei 1" - 1.5", but drop spindles will be more than that.
2) You'll bottom out more unless you replace the springs with stiffies. I wouldn't worry about the bump stops with spindles, though. Besides, hitting the bump stops is considered bottoming out, too.
3) Using drop springs doesn't necessarily mean you have to run a negative camber. That can be corrected, especially on later cars which got more adjustability for some reason.

all though a 2" drop may sound drastic its really not. I wanted the wheel well/tire fit to be just about perfect. What that means is I didnt want a lot of space between the tire and the top of the wheel well. I now have about 1/2" of space when my 17"s are on. Measure what u want to get rid off and that may help you make your choice.
GM's all have terrible wheel well/tire clearance!
