Heavy Duty Ball Joints?

OK, I have heard mention of 'heavy duty ball joints' - bbbbuuutttt, who makes em? Do they fit in the stock location fine? What makes them heavy duty? How muchmore do they cost they OEM replacement? Do they help at all, or just longer life? I gotta do my ball joints real soon, so any info is great!

Moog makes a "T2" series of parts that are marketed as stronger than stock and the usual replacements. Contact Moog for more info.

I couldn't find a Moog site either, but your local friendly speed shop should be able to help. That's where I got my Moog ball joints. BTW, I got the "enhanced design" with a wear indicator. Oh, I also noticed that Summit Racing carries them and they have a very good price. These things are definitely beefy!

Hmm...local speed shot...damnit - there aint none by me! lol
I was gonna do em this week, but now I dunno - plug I gota fix my jack, it sprung a major leak, and now I have no more fluid!
How much do the MOOG joints cost? I know I can get OEM replacement fer like 15 bucks a pop. Maybe NAPA carries em?

I think Summit Racing has them for about $27.00, so they aren't quite double the cost of a factory original. But, and this is a big but, I was also told the Moog's are worth the extra money. I think Summit might have some kind of expedited delivery (for an extra cost, of course!)

I just put in a new moog center link and idler arm in my car. Is their a standard series of moog parts and heavy duty series, what you called T2 parts? does summit carry the Moog T2 parts. That's who I ordered my Moog components from but the sales rep said nothing about having T2

Well, besides lasting longer, would a 'heavy duty' ball joint help out at all? I dont really see how it would, but maybe I am missing something...also - who/where is O'Reilly's???

I went to www.carparts.com and found 2 numbers...Moog P/Ns K6145 and K6145T. The latter is described as an "enhanced design". Both are priced at a measley $23.47. Good price to me. Plus, you can do a search on google for auto part coupons and use one of those to get them a bit cheaper.

I called Summit yesterday asking about the enhanced ball joints and they are actually cheaper than the standard Moog ball joints, why is this? I figured they would have been more. The standard were like 23 bucks and the enhanced were about 21, not a big difference but still why would they be cheaper, and what exactly is the difference between the two?

O'Reilly's is just another autoparts store like autozone or pepboys or advanced auto parts. They are everywhere down here. The enhanced version of their Moog parts are also cheaper than the standard.

I asked the very same question. Apparently because they sell more of the enhanced design they can sell them cheaper. BTW, I was wrong about Summit's price. I went to Summitracing.com and the Moog's are a little over $20.00.

I'm editing this message because I think it might be worthwhile for anyone that is thinking about replacing their wheel bearings with factory originals to compare those to aftermarket, such as Moog. I'm told there is a big difference.

Also, do you have a press to remove the old and install the new?

yes I do have a press. I replaced mine not to long ago, but that was before I discovered Moog components. I'm curious what the enhanced version of Moog's ball joints have over stock replacements.

I asked somebody at Summit that question. He wasn't sure but he thinks it means a wear indicator.

Haven't had a problem with any of the 3rd gens yet. On my 81Z I've been having to replace the bottom ball joints about every 12 to 14 months. I bought TRW and they had a lifetime guarantee, but its getting old. Every time I start to see front tire wear and take it in for an alignment the shops have told be TRW is junk, buy MOOG!. I finally did, but haven't gotten around to installing them yet. I will though.

See I replaced mine not too long ago with I believe TRW and now a popping noise has started to develop I haven't totaly ruled out the posibilty of it being the ball joints even though they are fairly new first on my list was a cracked frame but I haven't found anything. Just looking at Moog components compared to others you can tell they are quality parts.
