changing out axles...

i'm in the process of changing out my driver side rear axle, and i want to know whether i should go new or junk yard.

is it even available new?

That all depends on what is wrong with the axle you are replacing

actually Andy,

you're right, i meant to say the bearing, but should the axle go as well???

Can you see a lot of wear near the hub. if so, you should. They don't call them axle eaters for nothing.

I remember a Chevy pickup truck in our shop that failed it's State Inspection because of a leaking rear axle seal. Once it was taken apart it was discovered that the bearing was bad, as well as the axle. But I remember that they installed some kind of bearing or something that did not require replaceing the axle.

Sorry I cannot recall much more detail. But it is a very busy shop. I will ask at work today. I'm sure someone can tell me about it.
