now i just gotta figure out what heads were on it. It has a comp 270H cam in it, and the strock measured out to a 327. Is that still worth 200 beans?? Most of the engine is in good shape. The crank is fine, cam is good, pushrods and springs are good too.

well, uuhh .. the year is a mystery also. HERES THE STORY:
This guy at my work is selling his 70 monte carlo, and from the start, its a project car. So much of a project car it would even put first union to debt rebuilding it. He said the engine has 2,000 miles max on it but sat for the longest time and swore it was a 350 with a holley high rise manifold and a 750 cfm carb. It ran like **** and we believed the carb was to blame. The guy was a idiot and knew NOTHING about it, and so my friend bought it. We tore the engine apart the other night for the heck of it because hes junking the car, its rusted so bad its not even funny.
I believe the head gasket blew cause water was everywhere. Now im trying to find out what the heads are on it. If they are 350 heads then that would make it somewhere near 340ish??
So, its a nice fun project to keep me off the streets and learn a lot from. Got it pulled and its on a stand now just screaming for help. And i want TBI and not carb for some reason ..

OK it's the bore and stroke that makes the cubic inches on an engine. The heads have nothing to do with it. It's the volumetric capability of the block and crank, not the external parts.

Ok take the # over to www.mortec.com and match it up.

maybe it is a 307. they have the same 3.25 stroke as a 327 but a slightly smaller than 4.00 bore. something in the 3.8 area I believe. 307s are considered just as undesirable as a 305 but I think they could be built up a little better than a 305 since the bigger bore (its still not big enough). The tape measure/ ruler isnt accuate enough, you need to mic it out. Or run the #s on the block. if the heads really only have 1.72 intake valves then they suck ***, regular 305s have 1.84s right?
If its a 307 and you still want/need the motor to mess with offer a little less $100-$150. If it is a 327 buy it, you could make it a 350, or 383 if you want. but a 327 may be the way to go.
get better heads whatever it is if that is the right info.

The 307 is a 283 block (3.875") and the large journal 327 crank (3.25"). Idealistically the 307 is a more performance-orientated bore stroke combination than the 305. But still undesirable.
The "416" and our "187" 305 heads have 1.84 intakes. All others have 1.71" intake valves.
Those heads *cough cough* suck

AHHHH, Well .. a expert came over and measured it out. BTW, i didn't measure ... im relying on what my friend's dad is telling me cause i haven't had the chance to check it all.
ITS A 350 .. it is a 4" bore with a 3 1/2" stroke. Checked in the books and it says its a ginuine 350. i was right the first time.
The reason it wasn't running correctly was my first guess also ... BLOWN HEAD GASKET. So, with the money I saved on all the other crap for it .... i can buy some nice aluminum heads .. WEEEEEEEE :lala:
I got till the end of summer to get this engine built cause im getting a new car.
