you woudl have to get a whoel new rear dude. a 12bolt and a 10botl are completely different. a 12bolt that is made for our cars costs abotu $2000, or you can get all teh stuff and do it yerself if you are good at fabricating for only $1000.

wont work man. its like getting a set of pistons out of a 502 and hoping they will fit into your 305....sounds good, but it aint gonna do the trick..
how much is cheap? you can get gears for 10-bolts relatively cheap if you look around. just make sure that you look for the "7-1/2 inch" 10-bolt. (or 7-5/8"..same thing)
good luck

i hate to be a spaz but could someone tell me why it won't work???
i realize why I can't just swap the gears into my carrier. but why can't i get a whole new rear end, axles and all?
i'm sorry if i'm being really dense, i'm just trying to learn
and cheap??? probably for little of nothing, like free.... they belong to my uncle and he had them in his 1970 c-10 pickup (which is for sale on ebay, very nice truck) and he didn't like them, they were too low for the 3 speed... so they are just sitting there....
but anyway, i don't guess they'll do me any good.... oh well

well, yeah, if you wanted to get a whole new rear end then you would be fine. but from what you wrote i thought that you were planning on getting a 12-bolt carrier and putting it in your 10-bolt "housing". that wont work. but, yeah, you can get 12-bolts for our cars, and they are really trick setups, but they are also pretty hard on the wallet.
so, yeah, you can use the gears, but you will have to get an entire new rear axle assembly. which kinda negates the fact that you wanted to do it cheap.
of course, nothing's cheap or easy right? thats the story of my life...

ok, sorry, my vocabulary isn't the best, when i said carrier i meant the whole "hogs head" in the back....
what if I got the whole rear end out of an old pickup (which as far as i know it came from originally).
would that work??? 1970 c-10 Chevrolet pickup....
would that work???
I might could get that pretty cheap actually. My uncle may even have one....
how hard would that be?
