The WinALDL program does work with Windows XP Professional right? Just making sure. Finally received my Alienware laptop in so I'll be building the cable soon. Just need the wiring.

Windows and WinALDL
It only works with 95/98/ME, and maybe 3.x.

It needs direct serial port access.

But then agian, WinXP is a bloated pain in the rear, so just back-grade to 98SE...

Some things just work better the way they were...

Well, I can't downgrade. Even the basemodel laptop comes with XP Pro. If it doesn't work, I'll try that environment feature that runs it under an older 9x, ME, 2000 environment. Thanks.

That's good to know. Bad news is that my new laptop does not have a serial connection. Looks like I'll have to go back to the drawing board and see if I can build a parallel or USB connector (that works).

That laptop must have cost a pretty penny. Why dont you just go to a pawn shop or a second hand computer shop and buy an older laptop with working serial ports. You wont even have to downgrade. I've used my cousins dell latitude and it works just fine. I saw one like it at a pawn shop for 300 bucks. Alienware isnt known for their summer clearance sales (you know what I'm talking about ie. scsi ata133 gaming machines). The cable is 4-5 dollars worth of parts from radio shack. good luck i had lots of luck with winaldl 1.08a on the dell running 98se and 32mb ram.
