Will any year 454 TBI work on our cars?
I am planning on swapping in a 350 HO vortec engine next year. I happened to find out about somebody that has a 454 TBI off of a 199? one-ton Chevy that's for sale. I've been searching the archives and it seems that everybody talks about getting a TBI from a 90-93 454SS pickup, not a one-ton. Does it matter? What's the difference?
Also, I'm guessing that $75 is a good deal for the TBI...

Doesn't matter. All 454 TBIs are the same bore size. The injectors may be 80# or 90#, but either will be an improvement over the small block sizes. Injectors can be swapped if you want. They are still available from Gm for about $75 ea.
$75 is a very good deal. You will need some chip tuning to make the whole deal work.

Thanks guys...just what I wanted to hear.
Oh, and Paul--you're right, definitely will need to go to a reprogrammed chip. It seems like everybody recommends getting set up to burn your own chips, so that may be my best option. I'd better start checking out the PROM burning message board...

Also, I assume you know the manifold bores are different. Seems people have had varying luck boring the manifold. Another option is buy a carb manifold with an open phlenum and make an adapter for the TBI to bolt to.

Yeah, I'm going to have to get a new manifold anyway since the 350 HO will have Vortec heads. Fortunately, I work in a shop where I can design and machine all of my own custom parts such as carb-to-TBI adapters, spacers, brackets, etc. I even found out that we already have a PROM programmer! Can't wait to get started on everything...

Dang, I work in a small machine shop also. I've made my own TBI spacer and lower control arms (along with other little brackets and such) but I could really use access to PROM burning know-how. Good luck and have fun!
