CFI no-start troubleshooting help

I haven't had time lately to do much work on the T/A, but I did take it out a couple weekends ago and drive it... until it died. While accelerating I heard and felt a small "thump" (like a backfire) and the car quit running. The engine turns over with no problems, the injectors still squirt fuel, and the rotor turns. The engine almost fires up as soon as the key is turned, but won't start or even act like it might after that... although it continues to turn over and over and over... :-(
There aren't any codes on the computer (12 - 12 - 12, etc etc) , and the check engine light never illuminated.
Any ideas on what to look for next? What's a good way to see if spark is getting to the cylinders?
Thanks,
Rob

You might have a time and chain problem.

Thanks. I'll check that out. I was afraid it was gonna be something internal, but a timing chain would be the "best" of the internal problems...

While your there, you can stick in a nice cam to wake up that tired old engine ,if the time and chain is the problem.

Been thinking about this (maybe shouldn't think so much...) - isn't the distributor "powered" by the cam? The rotor turns while cranking... maybe the timing chain slipped? I dunno... Haven't had time to much trouble-shooting on this...
Thanks for the suggestions - keep 'em coming! I'm hoping to keep (get?) the car running long enough to restore the exterior & interior, then I plan on a 350...
