99 dollar slp differential

Is the O.E.M. Zexel-Torsen differential from slp a new or used diff?

Yes, they're used. They probably have about 10 miles on them at the most. SLP pulled them out of brand new Z28's. Even though the car was never titled, they still have to sell them a take-offs (i.e. used) because the car was driven with them installed.

Don't you have to get new axles to use that diff? I thought that before 93 was different? Or would it work in an 88' without any new axles?

Like to remind you that this is a carrier 3 differential so you will have to get different gears that are carrier 3 gears. So might as well pick up a set of 3:42 or 3:73 GM Motive gears. You will also need a shim kit but the rear end shop will have it for you usually if u don't already. Also I can't remember the name of the stuff but its a lub that is need for limited slip differential installs. You can get it at autozone, anyone remember the name? Its been so long since I installed my gears and SLP differential.

I thought that 89 was the changeover year for the 28 spline axles and only some of them go 28's.

No he is correct, its 89 and up. But you have to be careful because even some 89's still had the 26 splines for what I have heard.

Yes the switch was in 89. And some of them have 26 spline. Mine does and it sucks.

Oh, ok, so we have established that it will not work in an 88 unless you change the axles. Hmmm...interesting now that 99.00 doesn't seem so worth it

Brody, did you have to change your axles? If so how much were they?

Can't tell the number of splines without pulling the axles.

If you have 26 spline axles, I recommend just getting a 90+ V6 rear from junkyard since they have 3.42 gears and then you can just bolt in the SLP Posi and be done with it.

damn you brody you had me excited for a second...I thought maybe I wouldn't have to change my rear but I guess I do. So a 90-92 v6 will already have 3.42 gears...thats good I guess Ill try to find one and get the rear out of it and use the SLP posi...why did they take these carriers out of z28s?? I mean before they were titled whatever.

For those of you that have 26 spline axles, you could always buy better axles. I decided to get some Moser 28 spline axles and the Zexel Torsen diff from SLP. I'm quite happy with my setup.

This was done by SLP during the conversion to the SS. You could get an optional heavy duty auburn or eation (don't remember which) clutch type posi instead of the Zexel. No really good reason to change them. That is not the problem with f-bodies. It's the 7.5 gears that will break. The option should have been for a 12-bolt. Then we could ****** them up from the wrecked SS's for almost reasonable costs.

In all my 3 years of being on this board, I have *NEVER* heard of someone with an 89 or earlier car with a 10-bolt rear end finding 28 spline axles in it. They've always been 26 spline. 1990 cars are a toss up, but 91 and later will definitely have 28 spline axles. Where ever you got your 88 and up or 89 and up information, please update it.

You can e-mail SLP (Street Legal Performance) and tell them they need to update their information then. Since they also say it will only work with 89-92 28 spline vehicles...89-90 did have 28 splines though some 89's didn't. My buddy has an 89 Formy with 28 splines...has the SLP differential too. He likes it. Information stays the same, thanks for noting that though Kevin.

Is that Formula a TPI car? 305 5-speed or 305 automatic? Maybe I should say that I've never seen or heard of a V6 or TBI car with 28 spline axles in 1989 or older.

My '91 V6 has 3.23 gears. I think all the later model v6's got that ratio. Probably when they went to the 3.1 engine. So that would be 90-92.

If anyone needs a set of 28 spline axles, let me know. I'm doing some trading this next weekend and am getting a set of 28 spline axles in the trade.
