Bigger TBI Unit

Any 305 people replaced their stock TBI with the 670 cfm TBI Unit from Holley? It says it's for a truck. 2" throttle bores instead of the 1 11/16". Summit description also says it's for '87 to '89 GM, and I'm a '90, so I don't know if it will work with my computer, or if that just means need chip reprogrammed, or what? Also I assume one would need a new intake.

Any pros or cons on this as a possibility for my '90 LO3?

con is - its overkill. your 305 will not need that much flow until you can, if you can, get it to 330 horse.

this is the consensus anyway that ive read over the past couple years. i had one on my 305, it doesnt do much. i now have a radiused small block tbi on it and its better than having the 454 tbi on it. stock 305 btw.

I dont think its overkill. Unless you think 475 cfm is overkill. The injectors are overkill of course youd just want to put your stock pod on there.

Granted, It would be pointless unless you allready have full exhaust and a carb intake manifold

right with other mods. a lot of them, its a good idea. a stock 305. forget doing it. not going to gain much. i had fuel pressure boosted a bit, and the 454 tbi on my stock 305, even tried tuning some chip stuff. and still ran lean with hesitation off throttle. driving it was fine, but acceleration suffered because i couldnt get the pumpshot right. This also i beleive caused my ecm to retard timing and caused my car to ACTUALLY BE SLOWER overall.

SO. without the right tuning after doing it, and the right mods to NEED it, i would spend your money elsewhere. make it one of the last things you do.

475 pablo? i missed that. but, ya, not the worst thing you could do, but surely not the best either

I agree with it being a "last mod" - I was just trying to think ahead. My thought process:

Need new mo better heads - got a set of #416 heads to play with, not the best, but can port them on my own, and they'll be decent. BUT .... while porting the heads, I need to match port to the intake, so I kinda need a plan on an intake now before I go playing with the heads. BUT .... to decide the intake, I kinda need to know what's going on top, so thinking about the TBI.

As The Fix sang it in the 80's, "One thing leads to another."

So, the larger parts of my plan are:

TES Headers (stuck with emissions)
3" exhaust, Hi-flow cat
#416 ported heads
new intake
LT4 cam with 1.6

So i was trying to make the intake plans now (hoping to have the cash for it from Xmas) so that I could do my head work over the cold rainy months and be ready to bolt my goodies on in the spring.

All this considered, will I have a need for the larger TBI unit?

And can anyone recommend a decent EGR intake (on a budget)?
(for either the larger TBI unit or the stock unit, whichever consensus is reached) - and fit under stock hood - I'd like to keep my "sleeper" mode.

The 670cfm throttle body is flowed at 3" pressure drop. Four barrel carbs are flowed at 1.5" pressure drop. 670 @ 3" ~= 475 @ 1.5".

Hey camaronewbie,
Where are you in N.C. that you have to use TES headers for pollutions?
