cant get new 350 to run

I'm having a 350 put into my car right now. I talked to the guys doing it and they told me they are having problems getting the thing to start when its cold. They said it starts and dies for about 3 minutes or so till its warmed some then it runs fine.

I dont know all the details but the car thinks its running lean when its actually running rich from what they can tell. All sensors are new and check out Currently there is a TBI unit off a 305 truck running on it (my unit was shot) and the comp hasnt been touched.

Any ideas? I'm going down tomorrow so what info should I ask for?

Small injectors and if the system is from a a more recient 305 then the injectors were originally run at a higher fuel pressure. Make the pressure regulator adjustable and turn up the pressure. Have them double check with a scan tool that all the sensors are in speck. Ask them if they had to do any wiring. Lean will cause the car to stall when cold but timing has a lot to do with it as well. Too much and it'll do the same thing only it'll stumble, not bog like a lean condition.
Get more investigative. The easiest solution would be to get WINALDL running on a laptop and scan it that way. It's the unltimate freeware and the circuit interface is $3 parts, I sell em $20 shipped if you aren't comfy building the interface. If you've never heard of Winaldl to put it into perspective; it's like those super expensive scan tools for cars only it's free

Get your car away from those guys. It's lean. Injectors are too small to feed a 350. That is why it is hard to start cold and then won't stay running. Once the choke fuel decays out it gets real lean and stalls.

Get some 350 injectors and drop 'em in. Also get a 350 cal for the ECM. It'll run so much better. . .

JPrevost, thanks for the info on that program. I dled it to my laptop, bought a pile of bits and pieces to build the cable with tonight, and finally got some time tomorrow to go work with my car.

I saw it today, they didnt do a thing to it since I last talked to them as far as changes or adjustments, all they have been doing is driving it. I got in it today and it fired right up after being outside all night and about as cold as that cars ever gonna get.

Now the TBI unit on there right now is his for one of his trucks and he doesnt wanna leave it on my car if he can help it. Does the holley TBI unit work for 92 camaro's?? It only says it goes up to '90 on the site and when we called up holley they didnt know and wouldnt know till mid week sometime.
Do new GM TBI units really run nearly a grand??

The Holley truck TBI's do work on the cars. Jon Prevost uses one on his beasty car and they just require a little extra work.

A new GM TBI unit is nearly a grand. I priced one back in my early TBI days when I cracked an injector pod. Very rarely do you need to replace the TBI unit unless you break it like I did. But you can find them on ebay for under $100 with 350 injectors.

Well I tried making the cable today. Hacked off one end of the serial cable and make it almost like the diag on the website except for where it has the R3 resistor. I put in a 4 way switch there to be able to change from 3.9k, 10k, open and closed.
I guess I messed up pretty bad because I got nothing when I hooked it into the car. Yet all my joints were good cause I tested all the paths with a meter.

I had the software set to the 89-92 LO3 'E' ecm number, thats all I had to do software wise right?

brharris27370, whats 'a little extra work' mean exactly? And are those holly's emmisions legal? Holley couldnt answer our q's today when we called.

Oh, 88NOSTA, the fuel pump, filter and all fuel lines been replaced. I somehow managed to start at the back of the car (tank, pump, rear end) and worked my way foward (u-joints, trans rebuild, new power windows) when fixing this thing. Now I'm at the last step being the motor, after its done, there wont be anything origional mechanical wise left on the car

reborn92rs.....where did you find the article on how to build the required cable and where to access the software? I am thinking this is something I might want to explore with.

Thanks

Heres the website
http://www.winaldl.webhop.net/

I was reading another site on the winaldl, I forget which now but it said that when the ECM code is changed the program needs restarting before it works. I dont think I did that, at least I hope I didnt. That way it didnt work because of my crappy soldering

They Holley injectors flow differently than GM injectors and there has been some talk lately on diy-efi.org about having to adjust pumpshot and other variables in the chip to get them to run well. Some people modify the Holley unit to accept the GM injector pod and run GM injectors.

The WINALDL cable has been a PITA for me too. I have made a few but lately I can't seem to make one that works to save my life.

Figures, theres allways some kinda catch when you find something for half price. Guess Ill start hunting junkyards for TBI units. Everything on my origional unit was to worn out to reuse.

Holley finally got back to me and said they remanufacture tbi's specifically for my car, anyone know about these things? I didnt find any info on their website.

brharris27370, do you know if this unit will have the same problems as you said?? I dont wanna have to buy a new GM piece, but I dont wanna buy a holley that I cant return either.
