need more HP from old L03
need more HP from old L03
my friend has a 84 Z w/ a rebuilt LG4 with a couple of mods (performer intake, custom exhaust, cam, 700r4 w/ shiftkit and higher stall converter and posi rearend w/ 3:43 gears) and that thing flys for a 305. he wants to race but i don't want to because im pretty sure he'll leave me in the dust. i have a 91 RS w/ the L03 (it has about 160k miles on it). the only performance mods i have done to it is: K&N open element air filter, 160* thermostat, rebuilt 700r4 w/ shift kit and vette servo, 2300K stall TCI converter, B&M megashifter, and poly torque arm bushing. my question is what can i do to the car without breaking it and spending a lot of money? i need it to be very reliable. the miles is what im worried about.

Replace all the exhaust from the engine back. I always recommend headers and catback system for a single cat TPI car so you can get the 3" pipe instead of the 2.5" pipe. Also, you can search on ebay for carsound catalytic converter and pick up a good new 3" cat for around $60 shipped. But in SC your car doesn't have to be inspected at all so you may not care about that. If your still running the stock gears in your car you need to toss those 2.73 and go 3.42 as well. Get a SLP $100 posi http://www.slponline.com/view_produc...TNUMBER=64501T then lastly a LT1 cam ($50 used on ebay)will wake that 305 up and go nicely with your 2300 rpm stall. Change the intake too while you have it off with a Edelbrock TBI performer intake and you will also need to add an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and plan on WINALDL scantool at this point to get data for tuning that car and a custom chip.
thanks a lot brharris. im seriously thinking about getting the SLP posi. is it an easy install? im moving to NC in a few months (attending UTI in Charlotte). do they do all of that emissions crap in NC?

I paid a GM mechanic I know $50 to just set the backlash and pinion depth on my gears. I pulled the axles and all the manual labor stuff. If you don't get those gears set just right the won't last. Labor to install the gears and posi varies a LOT. I know how to set the gears since I have help this guy do a few but I still don't trust myself to put a set in. But the gears is a great SOTP improvement and makes the car substantially faster. 170hp + 2.73 gears = SLOW.
NC does have emmissions testing and Charlotte is by far the most strict nearly CA strict. I live near High Point and have avoided Emission testing until next year when the whole state goes emmission testing. I may have to tune me an "Emmission" chip for my Camaro and my wifes Fiero since they may not pass next year. I hope I can get through the visual inspection by faking the hood not opening or something like that. I don't want to hook that air pump crap back up. If I were you, I would keep my SC tag as long as I could.
