Why am i sucking *** down the track? (long)

The other night at the track I was pulling horrible times...yes i know i have a 305 (l03), but with the mods i have i SHOULD be pulling faster times.
My mods are mostly exhaust...Edelbrock TES headers, 3"hi-flo cat, 3" mid-pipe, 3" dump before the muffler (opened), flo-pro muffler. ads super chip, k&n air filter. (auto tranny btw) I was pulling a best time of 16.71@89MPH.
I know its not my driving, i had another person drive and pulled the same time. Friend of mine (l03), has no exhaust mods ('cept he yanked off his muffler), and pulled a 16.4 with a slipping tranny.

PLease give a hand on this one, its bugging the HELL out of me.

Thanx Brian.

What are your 60 foot times? At 89mph you should be in the mid to high 15s. I used to run 15.9 @ 86.

seems like a good mph for an auto rs, but the time says you were probably spinning out too much. Look at my sig. I just don't have the headers yet. Can i ask you where you got your Y-pipe and what kind ? I'm looking to get one that will fit with the hooker comp. headers. thanks

Mods:Hooker Aerochamber 3" exhaust, gutted kitty,
March 2 piece underdrive pullies, smog pump gone,;these two made a very noticable difference.
14x4 K&N open air element filter-the best mod so far
Eibach springs with KYB's all around.
Appearance: Harwood cowl hood, Z-28 wing, painted black(7/20/00)-original color was light blue
*All these mods were made this year
Stock Options:117,000 miles on motor, 5spd, TBI, 305, T-tops
Run a best of 16.7 @85mph with traction problem. Have to try again sometime.

You guys are making me feel better. My best has been 16.72 (on the brakes in a break-out run one cool night), 2.486 60'. Only difference from my signature is an open element air cleaner and 6 degrees advanced timing. My "typical" trap speeds are 80-81 mph for 16.8ish, 2.5 sec 60' runs. This in an open diff, 134k mile, otherwise stock car. I run at 5800' altitude Bandimere, air typically equates to over 8500'. I'm feeling a LOT better, thank you!

Your mph suggests you've got problems leaving the line, either tire spin or power not coming in until well under way. If indeed you spun through the 1st 60',I would guess the former. My '57 runs the traps at 91-93, and I know it's a slug off the line (high 2.3's to 2.4 60'); low-90's are mid-14 sec trap speeds. That's from highway gears, not tire spin, though.

at that trap speed your not going to have a problem hitting 15's if you get it right. either you don't have enough gear or your having a traction problem. if your having a traction problem i'd assume it's because you don't have a posi since it's not like you have alot of power. need to work on getting it to hook up better. i'd say your somwhere near the 200hp area. i don't think you should have too much trouble getting a 200hp engine to hook up.
