Distributor Replacement
'90 RS LO3 TBI (Stock at the moment)
I need a new distributor - mine squeaks really bad and I'm told to just replace it. As I can tell, I have the HEI with external coil.
I'm tight on cash, but would like to add decent parts as I try to plan ahead for my mods. I'm not trying to beat anyone at the track with my mods, just attain decent street performance for my own fun (I can't afford to be #1 anywhere except in my son's eyes).
I'll be adding in the next year:
- Headers, hi-flow cat, exhaust (smog state)
- Weiand Action Plus Intake
- LT1 Cam
- '416' heads (ported & polished)
Can someone make a cost-effective reccomendation?
Thanks.

my woudl say your first try shoudl be to shoot some WD-40 or greased lightning down the collar. see fi you can buy your self a little bit of time with teh current distributer. if you decide to replace it a stocker is plenty good. your local dealership parts counter shoudl be able to hand you one.

I had some WD-40 shot into it - helped for about a week. I replaced the rotor, cap, and ignition module about 3 weeks ago - when it first started squeaking. I noticed when I took cap off it was filthy inside, and rusty. I tried to get it cleaned up as best as I could, and used WD-40 then. Stopped squeaking for about a week, and now it's back at it. Someone else here told me to just replace it, that the squeak happened to them in their TBI trucks.
So I was unsure as to whether I needed to spend some extra money on better stuff (I see/hear all about MSD and other aftermarket ignition stuff all the time), or if the basic GM would be enough given that I'm not planning any track time, but rather just some good clean street fun.
Thanks for input!

id just get an oem replacement. The bushing up top is probably shot/not getting oil and every day you leave it in there is another day that it could seize up.

MSD and Accel both make direct replacements for the computer controlled external coil hei. Plug right in to the stock connectors.
Accel #60110, $239.95 at Summit.
MSD #8366, $289.95 at Summit.
I'm using the Accel Billetech, the MSD costs just a little more.
Both have sealed bearings instead of bushings and should last a long time.
Neither is gonna get you any hp improvement, but both are accurate and reliable.
