I would suggest getting 3.43's for that purpose. Helps great off the line, still gets good mileage on the highway, and is able to go in excess of 120. I need to know what gears you have now...I'm assuming 2.73's. If you do I suggest getting a posi at the same time...it will only help you later down the line.

Headers and 3" cat. (get a real 3" cat-back too) top speed is all about HP and if you have an auto you'll be stuck in 3rd gear(1:1) anyways. In my car with a 1:1 ratio and 3.73 gears 100 mph is at 5000 rpm. You're going to have to get a custom/aftermarket chip to get rid of the speed limiter at 110 mph also.

On the main page on this site go to the Equations page and you can see what gear ratios and RPM will give you the mph you want.

I just checked in there, 3rd gear auto(1:1), 2.73 gears 26" tall tire = 140 mph @ 5000 rpm. Perfect for highway racing.

i was told this cause i have an 89 rs and am planning on doing gears and posi as my next mods. most of the 89 camaros (i dont know if its the same for birds) have 26 spline axles, but a few have 28 (it was a change over year evidently) and the slp posi only works for 28 spline (so i was told), however the 90+ camaros have 28 spline and are a direct replacement. if anybody knows this to not be true let me know before i buy new axles along with my 3.42 and posi. also, if anybody knows how to find out the spline count without taking it apart and counting them that would be a big help too.

For SilverSub122
I would check first hand personally, my '89 GTA had guided slots in the heads and self-aligning rocker arms(not supposed to happen), and a 3.45 9-bolt rear with a single cat exhaust(also not supposed to happen), so since you're close to the change over yr, I would just check for sure. It's a simple jack car up, remove cover(gear lube=~$4), push axle in/remove C-clip with magnet and pull axle(leave the wheel on to save time) take E-brake off (this should take less than 45 min). This question should've been a new post, but if you plan on running 12's at some time in the future the axles upgrade along with an AL cover would be a good upgrade over stock anyways.

Forget about headers and all that nonsense. I did it to my old RS and it did NOTHING. You REALLY need gears, a posi, and a torque converter. Then you'll start hauling more ***. Like people are suggesting, find some 3.42 (better yet, 3.73s) gears, a posi unit, and get a 2400 stall torque converter.

Depending on the year of your car you may have to buy axles. The SLP take-out posi requires 28 spline axles. Later year model camaros and birds had them if yours is like a 91 or 92 I'm sure you have the 28's already but otherwise you probably have 26, so yes you have to buy new axles to mount the slp posi.

since you are taking the time to put in the gears you might as well do posi at the same time, it'll give you a lot better take-off since power is going to both wheels instead of just the one. when i do mine im getting it all done at the same time.
