took half the air injection off today.
took off half (driver side) air injection today. didnt mean to have to take off the tubes, but the oneway valve on top of it just snapped when i went to take off the hose. it was disintigrated from the inside out... good thing i already had the pipe plugs.
I cant wait, (sarcasm) to take off the other side and the rest of the stuff. i had to break the tubes to get the last one off, the were rusted in, even after soaking in wd40. tough to get a wrench in there too. nut just strips out with a wrench too.
anyway.. i've unplugged part of the diverter valve, other than that all is ok. sure does clean it up, even with one side out. so what i was asking is... what side effects do you think i might experience, (if any, i think none, but... ) from having just one side that way?
right now im running no cat, no muffler. it;s really not all that loud. f'n peanut cam and manifolds on a 305, just isnt loud. even without cat and muffler. LOL
anywho... just wonderin what you guys think bout this partial mishap.
o, you guys who didnt remove you smog pump at all, what noise do you hear from it pumping air out?
thanks. later

actually when i gutted my cat, i noticed NO sound difference. so when somebody stepped on my chrome tips and busted the baffles out of the muffler, so i cut it off, it really wasnt that much of a difference. Ive been driving like this for a couple weeks now, no cops, only one alarm set off. Its only loud when im full throttle at 5k rpm.
well, its loud from about 1000 rpm up to that
.
the best sound ive ever got had out of my car was cat, no muffler, with a down pipe pointing straight down out the back.
i think this sat im gona take the rest of the air stuff off.

Hey Snuffy, get you some PB Blaster! Works tons better than WD-40. I know your woes about the air tubes. I took mine off last summer and I have NEVER had so many busted knuckles and bleeding hands. Wish I had had some PB Blaster then! GM should be shot for that damn design! I swear that they made a special bolt for those things. I tried metric AND standard sizes and nothing seemed to fit quite right. In retorspect, it would have been easier to just take the manifolds off to do it. At least then I could've got at 'em with some vise-grips. Oh well, live and learn right? DOn't worry, you wont suffer any ill effects running just one side till you've got it all off.

vice grips are what i used for loosening them, then i could get a wrench in there. wish i had a deep sock that fit, i would cut the tubs, crip em so they couldnt fall in, then just ratchet em off. im not using them ever again, im not concerned with destroying them, especially since they have corroded from the inside out.
any tricks to taking the air pump itself off?

Just remember to have two wrenches/ratches ready for getting the pulley off the air pump. You have to remove it to get to the bolts on the bracket (or at least I did) and that thing spins VERY easy.
Of course you'll have to "tighten" one, while you loosen the other two, but don't remove them once you have them broke loose. Run them out just enough to stick a prybar or long handle screw across two of them so you can keep the pulley from spinning while you get the 3rd loose.
One thing I used on the flare fittings attached to the manifolds was one of those "Clench Wrench" tools from Sears. It's the only thing I found that would actually hold on to them little suckers.
One more tip....... Let the engine idle just long enough to warm up the exhaust manifolds. It works like a heat wrench.

Yeah, once you get the pulley loose you MAY be able to drop it out the bottom, but more than likely you will have to cut a little notch in your fan "shroud" to bring it out the top.

You can remove just the hoses and stuff coming off the pump and leave it there. That's not a problem.

I left my air pump in after I removed the AIR for a couple of months. I installed headers without AIR so I just disconnected everything from the pump. I did not take the pupm off because it would not come out (top bolt was stripped) so I left it in. I recently got the pump out and installed the longer serpentine belt. When I was removing the pump I spun it and it sounded kinda raspy and didn't spin very freely. I am not sure if it was supposed to sound like that or if it was possible starting to sieze up. Anyways I didn't hear a thing with the pump on and connected to the serpentine belt and it didn't cause any problems what so ever.

I assume you are talking about the pump and pulley as a unit. I removed both from the top without any problem. There are only three bolts that hold the pully on and 2 bolts that hold the pump itself on. Remove the pully and then the two bolts and it slips right out. The hardest part of the whole process is getting the bolts out that are siezed in the aluminum bracket. For that I had to unbolt and lay my AC compressor aside and get at the top pump bolt with some vice grips. After some turing and swearing it broke loose and walla! out it came.

If you're taking the pump off get a good ****ing fit on that Torx bit because it strips easy. I'd kill the man who designed torx bits and I'd kill the man who decided to put them on our cars.

Well, I've had the air pump on after the AIR stuff removed since my header install.. I havn't really noticed any noise from it. Of course, the injectors are pretty loud, and the fact that the cat has a hole in it doesn't help at all either. All I can her outside the car is sputtering from all these different sounds. I'm sure I have some header collector leaks as well. When I removed all those air pipes that go to the manifolds, I got about 4 of them out with a wrench, but I ended up taking a tin-snips to the rest of them.. I got fed up with dealing with them and just cut the pipes. I'm glad some of you guys had better luck than I did.

Yeah, torx bits do suck. I have replaced almost all of them on my car with standard bolts though.
