Are the cylinder heads for the 305 and 350 engines similar?
Edelbrock has 50-state cylinder heads that fit 5.7 engines, but it also says that it'll fit a TBI.

Generally 350 heads have 62-64cc combustion chambers as opposed to 58cc (although some aluminium heads for 350s are lower) that the 305 comes with. Plus the 5.7 heads generally come with 2.02 intake valves which you dont see on 305s too often (but they do work!). They'll bolt up fine though, and work ever better if you have them milled to decrease compression

Typical 305 heads have 1.75/1.5 valves.
350's have 1.75/1.5 , 1.94/1.5, or even 2.02/1.6 valves.
For the most part the 1.94/1.5 are sufficient giving excellent throttle responce and power. A 305 won't benefit with the 2.02/1.6 because they are too close to the cylinder walls, therefore ristricting air flow. The 1.94/1.5 will give lots of power on a 305, but harming the throttle response a bit at low rpm.

I suggest not putting 350 heads on a 305 it lowers your compression and does a whole lot extra. Before I put in a L98 cam and heads. I lost ALL my power my car was slow as hell. I had absolutly no low end power (so little that my car bogged off the line) and the top end wasnt even all that great.
I later changed over to monte carlo SS heads (305 motor) and all my power returned...atcually a whole lot more power came with it.

About the only heads that had 1.72" intake valves where the G0D awful late 70's-early 80's SMOG heads.
Those heads should be thrown overboard at the local sandbar to keep you from drifting off while you down a few.
