Problematic throttle body ???
Problematic throttle body ???
Hi Guys,
My car is Formula WS-6 1988 with an L03 5.0L and 5 speed trans.
My problem is the following:
When the car is turned off and I press on the gas pedal, it moves freely. Then I start the car and the revs go to about 1700-1800 rpm then slowly go to idling at around 750 rpm. I think this is normal. All vacuum hoses were checked and are ok. But then, if want to press on the gas pedal when the engine is running, I have a hard time just trying make it move from its initial position. It is kind of stuck there. So I press hard on it, and release my foot and the revs go back to 1800 rpm (when cold) or 1500 rpm (when hot). I have to kick it, making the revs go to 2000 rpm to have the revs go back to normal idling.
But is only to have the pedal move initially because after it has been de-stuck, it moves freely all along the pedal travel. If I release my foot from the pedal and I want to press again on it, it becomes again hard. It is easier to feel it when driving at low speed. I am making wheel spins every time I want to start with the 1st gear, otherwise I have to slip the clutch. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME
Thanks for the help

Your TBI probably has some carbon build-up in it. Take the air filter off and have a look down into the bores.
If not, check all the linkage and make sure nothing is bent or frayed.

I hate to say this but it sounds like the thottle shaft bores are wearing. I had the same problem on a 86 tpi car. What happens is that when the car is not running there is no vacuum on the throttle blades and will move freely. When the car is running there is a high vacuum on the throttle blades and due to the worn throttle shaft bores it causes the blades to bind in the tb bores. Take the air cleaner off and see how much play you have in the throttle shaft. If this is your problem you will need to replace the tb.

I am having the same problem. You have to really punch it to break it loose. Plus I never idle below 1500
I have a whole in my intake manifold gasket though right in the front, So I think that is the cause of my vacuum woes.
