MODS vs. 1/4 mile times. 9 Timeslips inside.

I finally got my timeslips scanned and figured I'd make a nice little post showing 1/4 mile improvements with the mods I documented.

Car # 0481

Closest to stock I don't have a slip, but ran 16.0 @ 85 mph with only mods being 3.73 gears/posi and a hypertech streetmaster chip. Everything else stock. Full weight ~3500-3550 lbs with driver.

1. (baseline)same as above just with 82-84 factory cowl induction, hooker 3" cat-back and about 2 yrs later.

2. Added K&N filter to stock housing, water temp was 230*+

3. 160* stat, water temps below 180*

Somewhere between around runs #3 or 4 I modified the stock air filter housing by removing the heat riser valve.

4. added edelbrock headers and 3" cat, bumped timing to 7* from 0.

5. Adj. vavle lash (tried 1.6RR, but would run quiet(blamed stuck lifter), so I put the stock ones back on), justifying why I re-adj valve lash on a good running engine. Note 60', b/w 60' and tighter valves, I think hurt the topend.

6. Nothing but driving for a month, assume valves loosened up a little.

This set didn't come out very clear.

7. In goes the 1989 L98 cam, 1.6RR, and stock chip. Car had no bottom end power. Couldn't spin the tires at the track if I tried.
60' 2.158
330' 6.198
1/8 9.478 @ 73.67 mph
1000' 12.305
1/4 14.674 @ 94.66 mph

8. added Edelbrock prefomer intake, started burning my own chips. 1st time in a while I've had trouble hooking up.
60' 2.187
330' 6.121
1/8 9.341 @ 75.59 mph
1000' 12.152
1/4 14.512 @ 94.91 mph

9. More chip tuning, shifted a little earlier than usual.
60' 2.151
330' 6.124
1/8 9.349 @ 76.00 mph
1000' 12.153
1/4 14.48 @ 96.28 mph

Since the last run, I replaced the factory stock wires (fixed a miss at 3000+ rpm), added a accel coil. Car feels better than ever. Also got all new tires(no too happy with them) Hopefully get 14.3s or 14.2s and 97+ mph this friday.

I think with a bigger cam you could hit 13's with the stock heads. That would be an accomplishment.

Well documented, shows what kind of improvements can be had for other guys.

Price break down:

struts GR-2? kyb ~$120 had
Gears/posi ~$500 had
Cat-back $240 had
Headers/Cat Free ~$320/~$80 new

K&N $40
160/180 stat $4
Edebrock preformer $50 used
carb/TBI adapter Free ~$20 new?
Cap/rotor/wires/coil ~$30 + ~$45 coil (free)
misc. hoses/bolts ~$10

L98 cam Free ~$25 used
1.6 RR Free ~$140 new
LT4 retainers/locks $24
crane '981 springs free ~$60
spring shims $6
valve seals free ~$15
timing chain free ~$15
intake/exh gaskets free/re-used ~$30

Chip burning stuff ~$250 (had $175 worth already)
Scanner ~$200 (already had)

To duplicate on a bone stock car it would cost ~$2000 for everything, but that's including all the little things too.

Most of the parts I took/stole from my GTA after the engine went, and the gears, cat-back, struts have been on the car for 3+ years (since highschool). So really in the last 8 months since I started driving this car again I've only spent ~$250 of performance stuff.

I've just been playing with this car while going to college this year(jr) waiting for summer so I can finish installing the 350 and supercharger into my GTA(in NY). I couldn't stand going slow and I had the parts at my disposal. I also like the fact I took the underdog 305 TBI and it can now hang with "some" 350 TPIs and bone stock LT1s, while keeping it NA.

i already have most of the stuff like headers, 3inch from the y pipe back(no cat), i have an open element filter and a k&n inside of it and i did the ultimate tbi mods with the adjustable fuel pressure regulator and stuff i just dont have the valve train, cam, gears and intake manifold yet. but gears and intake will be soon this summer and i hope to do a cam this winter while the car is sitting. my goal really is what you have done with yours make it hang with a stock lt1 and beat a stock L98 iroc which i am not really that far behind i also have the kyb shocks and struts and new eibach 2 inch drop springs on the way as i am typing nice job man i hope i can get mine into 13s but i plan on replacing heads and stuff down the road to

Re: MODS vs. 1/4 mile times. 9 Timeslips inside.

nice job man...posts like these keep me excited about my engine build...I hope to have it done by the end of the month. Its a rebuilt 305 bored .30 over with an lt1 cam, a set of 305 vortecs with new springs, 350 injectors, adjustable fuel pressure regulator set to 15 psi edelbrock performer rpm intake for vortecs and hooker headers with a 3" exhaust that dumps everything in front of the passenger rear tire and of course a custom chip. next up would be 3.42 gears and a posi unit. I hope to run high 13s..do you guys think its possible with 3.42s and my little 305..(well 310 if you want to get technical):....and in two years after i have a new tranny and rear on the car maybe swap out to the 350 vortec heads for the bigger combustion chamber and lower compression and turbo the sucker. =) keep up the work and have fun man.

Awesome, going back memory lane. Keep up with it, modding cars is fun. This forum has by far the most technical info out of any I've been to.

Update on the car, I still have it. It quit running in 2006, probably a clogged cat? I haven't gotten back to fix it yet. Although it did make it into my garage briefly about a year ago and I cursed it as I pushed it onto some patio stones (behind my fence) HaHa. I'd love to build a nasty street/strip car out of it with a single turbo LS engine. I never got my D1SC Prochraged GTA to the track while it was running well, (it still has a chance though if I don't give in and part it out very shortly). Always hoped it would be a nice 12 sec daily with A/C. I recently purchased a 11 sec daily with a warranty even. Lol.

Anyways, now that we all have high speed internet, here's a few pics. And maybe some motivation to stay in school, doing hands on work has helped me immensely in my career.

Yeah, I get a kick out seeing a post from something I was part of 5+ years ago. Saw one on STS Turbos (the rear mounted ones), foot in mouth for sure. haha.

I recently used the forum to track down a fuel pump problem (the GTA has internal and extrenal) and diagnostics. Always helpful if you're willing to search for a while.

Thanks, it would be doing better if I didn't buy a house in FL in 2005, that's for sure. Having some good, practical, hands on knowledge always helps.

It's LeMans blue, they made C5s and C6s in that color, I think about 1500 C6 Z06s in '06-'07 only. I've run a best of 11.85 @ 121.6, with a hand full of 12.0s and 12.1s at 118 (12.02@120.58 the first time at the track w/ a paper tag), ave. ~20-22mpg per tank, (mid to high 20s on the highway).

I'm working on my GTA every weekend right now.

I'm sure I can still find the old TBI timeslips and scan them in if someone really wants to analyze them. It'll be a few days for sure, but it's amazing what a $40 printer/scanner/fax will do now that I had to go to the library (IIRC) for those crappy images before.
