416 head on a Lo3
416 head on a Lo3
Ok.
I'm sure i wanna do the swap. Can you guys tell me what i need exactly? I know i need to do some work on the intake bolt holes thats n/p but what else??
Will my rockers fit with the 416 casting?
Are the stock lo3 rockers roller rockers? (i really don't know much about head work)
valve springs?? i know i should get new ones. what are the z28 springs that everyones talking about??
whats the difference to lo3 springs?
Are the 305 and 350 springs identical? (i need to know for ordering)
copper gaskets?? are they worth the extra cost. i know i'm gonna be pulling my engine appart 2-3 times this summer.
I'm not doing a cam swap yet.. I wanna see the difference the 416 heads do on an otherwise stock engine.

Thanks guys in advance
BTW what does code 32 mean.. the faq or chilton didnt explain in plain english
oh and i am gonna get the heads shaved and the valves cut and seated nicely with a 3 angle valve job

Port the heads or you will be wasting alot of time for only a small gain in performance. With just a little work to those heads it will be a BIG gain. There is plenty of info on how to port them on this site do a search. Fbird'88 has posted lots of information on this very thing.
Ive ported mine. The car hauls ***.

yeah
i'm gonna port then for sure... but i really need to know will i run into complications b/c the heads are pre 87... not center bolt??
Shoud i use the stock rockers that came with th 416 heads?

I just finished porting/polishing #416's. I had 1.94 intake valves installed (Manley), but left the stock 1.5 exhaust valves. I'm adding 1.6 rollertip rockers (Summit Brand) - a compromise on cash to REAL roller rockers. I used Summit Springs - the ones with the .490 max lift and 1.25" size.
Machine shop charged me $215 US for multiangle valve job, cutting for 1.94 valves, shaving .020 for slightly added compression, and install of Viton valve seals. A nice $50 electric die grinder can be had at harborfreight.com - they also have a $25 thing for a router that reduces speed (variable switch like for your ceiling fan) of the grinder, and I got nice carbide cutters at discount-tools.com for cheap (less than $10 each, I bought 3). I used less than half of the Standard Abrasives port/polish kit I ordered - so if you'd like that for your job, I'll sell what's left to ya at a deal.
I basically followed FBird's and Sitting Bull's instructions, along with the SA instructions. Probably not perfect, but has to be an improvement, and doing it myself the price was right! I'd be happy to share any info - I had never done it before this, and had a blast doing it myself.

...
How much would it hurt power if i stayed with the stock valves? I mean 1.8x" valves are way bigger than the 1.6" ones on LO3:s and aren't that much smaller than 1.94" valves.
I'm not gonna need to rev the engine to 6k.. mostly under it. do i still need new valve springs? i've got 80k on the ones i have. I wanna make power (when the engine is finnished) at around ~2500-5200rpms give or take 500rpms..
I can get the valve seats and valves cut allmost for free but new valves and enlarging the valve seats gonna cost a hellava lot more..
whats the thing about rocker studs? push-in and screw in??? could somebody explain?
What are the bennefits of roller rockers or rollertip rockers???
I know my engine has a roller cam but does that have anything to do with the lifters??
Can i re use my LO3 rockers????

i think you would be ok with 1.84s if money is tight, it will be tons better than what you have.
valve springs, i would replace, i bet you would see your lo3 benifit from new springs, as it sits now, then you add more lift, and more revs, they aren't the ticket.
rocker studs, i would do if you can, but if you aren't running very much lift, you could still run press ins, but for the small amount of money, it is good insurance.
benifits of roller rockers is alot less friction, and reduced mass.
benifits of roller tips, is a little less friction
you might be able to, but it will depend on lift, if you are running a higher lift cam , you may need long slot rockers.

To answer your question, code 32 is an EGR fault.

I had Viton seals installed.
Guides .... hmmmm. The machinist asked if I wanted bronze guides or seats or something (idiot here) - I asked his opinion, he said waste of cash, so I didn't. He told me that some of his racer customers insisted on having them for their race applications, but I really didn't have the need for the bronze unless I just wanted to spend cash to pump my ego.
I was also told that the press-in studs were good for under .500 lift, unless there was a problem - which he didn't see apparently, cause I still have 'em.
I gave this guy (my machinist) an open ticket (within reason), explained my application (just wanna have some fun), and asked his opinion and told him to use his best judgement, and to spend my hard earned cash wisely - and I feel that he did that well.
