Ram air hood with TBI

I am going to be getting the ram air II hood, but most people that have them have the TPI setup. I wasn't sure what would be the best way to go with it. Should I get the airbox or no? Should i switch to an open air element? I was thinking the open air is the best way cause the air will just shoot through the hood right into it. Anyone have any ideas or pics of what they may have? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

IMHO get an open element and the hood (they look so amazing) and u will def feel a little boost in power and looks. Ive read where manufatures are like "only use with tpi .... screw that it will work too with TBI. Good luck with it and if u get it SHOW SOME PICS

Anyone know a good place to get the open air element and filter? I wanted to get a K&N filter for it also. Any sites that sell the open air element? Thanks.

wouldnt the ram air hood work better with tbi?

pat12se- you can buy an open air element at pep boys or autozone and they also carry k&n too.

If you check out my thread about open elements here you'll find a great step-by-step for installing an open element air filter. As for the parts, I have an edelbrock open element filter on mine and it only ran my $30 from AutoZone. They also sell the K&N filter for it for around $45. I would highly recommend the K&N becuase it's the last filter you will ever have to buy and they work great.

Just to let you know I would definatly go with the K&N. I bought one awhile back for my stock 92 tbi 305, put it on in the parking lot and felt an immediate diffrence when I left, I let it out later and even noticed a gain of 300 rpm on my shift points and thats with the crappy stock single snorkle.

Is that the K&N filter in itself or the whole K&N open element that you went with? Some people talk about using Edelbrock element with a K&N filter. What did you guys use?

Ok, I'm gonna go with a K&N open air element piece. What is the exact size that I should go with? I'll use the 14 inch one, but what element height should I go with? There's a 3, 4, 5, and 6 inch height. I was thinking either the 3 or 4 inch. Also, what size drop base should I use? The 1 and 1/4 inch or the 7/8 inch? Can someone who has this open element please help me out? Thanks again.

Alright, well, I don't know what car you have, but mine is a 90' RS Camaro with the 305 TBI. I got the Edelbrock open element (I believe the 14") and it was only $30 from AutoZone. The instalation is easy, just make sure you go to the link I posted earlier and use the instructions. Just get the K&N that matches the filter it comes with. I have it on mine, I just forgot to put it in before I took the picture that I posted. I noticed IMMEDIATE changes in performance. The stock snorkel on the 305's is only good enough for up to 4,500 RPMs when most of our red lines are at 5,000 RPMs. Now I can go a little past the redline and STILL not lose power!!

Hope that helped!

Excellent. I should have all this done as soon as my ram air hood comes in. Then I need some body work and paint job for my car. Lookin at maybe 3 weeks depending on how long it takes to ship the hood. Anyone know? I'll take some pics and post them as soon as it's all completed.

When you get the hood painted let me know how much it cost you. I'm getting the SS hood for mine and I have no idea how much the paint job on it is gonna run me...

I bought a 3" cowl hood not long ago and I am getting it painted soon. I went to Maaco and they said they would paint the entire hood (inside too) and clear coat it and fill in a dimple on mine for $150. I bought a 5" open air element from summit with a reusable filter for $45. I still have about an inch to go also. It's a non-dropbase. It is a flatbase without the spacer ring on the TBI. Works good and clears the distributor nicely.

I have an SS Hood with an open element as well....

I would highly suggest getting a filter taller then 3" with the extra clearance, the filter sites DIRECTLY behind the opening, but with my old 3" filter, it sits lower, so the air goes directly over it....

But it does provide some cold air for the open element to breathe, no necessarly a Ram Air effect though....

All you really need to do it get a sheet of metal or something and make yourself a little 'box' to go around the back of the element. You can attach it to the element or the bottom of your hood and that will make for the actual 'ram air' effect and keep more hot air out, especially if you leave the bottom of your 'box' open. The colder air coming in will not only be forced into the air cleaner, but any extra air will force any hot air coming up back down.

Here's the factory ram air setup used for the 82 and 83 Cross-Fire Injection Z-28. Maybe it'll give someone some ideas.

Here's all the pics: http://www.s10wildside.com/crossfire/

wow thats amazing, i didnt know the camaros ever came with cowl induction. I have an 88, but i may just have to get that hood for my car and design an open element with foam around it for the car..although I wonder how it handles in the rain....

Camaros never came with stock cowl-induction, thats a ram-air setup on what I understand is a VERY rare type of Z28. Don't think I've ever even seen the cross-fire model in person. As for cowl induction in the rain, no problem, won't even effect it. Make sure you have some kind of gate/cover on it so leaves and other various objects don't get in though.

I think I read somewhere on this board that about 60,000 F-Bodies were made with Cross-Fire Injection. It's a lousy performer, but I like the hood. It's the only factory fiberglass hood I'm aware of.

Well, I'm actually getting the whole car painted over again in the same color. The paint I have on there is original....over 13 years old. So there are some spots that look really bad.

Ohh, neverming, thanks though. If by chance you remember though when you go to get it painted ask how much they would have charged ya...I'd apreciate it. My hood won't be coming for a while, so I havn't really started shoping around, but it hopefully won't be too long from now
