its best to use a flat base, that way u can remove the spacer ring which resticts airflow.
Also, i think 14x4 is a little much, especially for a stock hood. I have a 14x3 and even thats cutting it a lil close.
There is some gain, but dont expect too much. I think a functional cowl hood would be great for future consideration, The hot air kills performance.

I put an Edlebrock open element on my 90' RS and it required that I keep the spacer ring in. Got it from AutoZone for like $30, looks and works great.

summit sells the flat-base by itself. I think its like $15.
I dont even think the open element is really worth it if you cant remove the spacer ring.

Even with the fact that mine still has the spacer ring I noticed instant results, especially above 4,000RPMs. I can go past the red line now and still not lose power, as before right about the 4,000 mark it started to bog down. For $30 you can't go wrong...

Buy some all-thread and bend it up.

I bought a 14x5" offset open element from summit with a reusable filter for $45. I also have a 3" cowl hood too but I didn't use the spacer ring. I have maybe another inch to go but I did have to cut off some of the thread on the top. I am considering trying to get a custom made plate that goes under the open air element that will allow me to put foam all the way around the filter (like the old school cars with shaker hoods) and close off the engine bay and let it get the air only from the cowl hood. Does that make sense to anyone?

Summit, Moroso, and Ram Air Box all make air pans. I believe R.A.B. has one like you want. See my posts in this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=163761

What I did was I bought a K&N fipk cold air intake for a 96 TBI Dodge and routed 4 inch flexible aluminum tubing all the way to the left front fender.

Well, as I just found out at the track tonight, an open element is only good in 2 conditions: A) You have functional cowl/ram air and are getting cold air to the filter, or B) you live in Alaska where the air is ALWAYS cold. I was running a 15.3 with the stock intake on AND a bad clutch, but it was in Feb. Now I have a GOOD clutch, and my open element, and I don't even want to talk about how bad my car was doing. I live in AZ, go figure. Can't wait to get my SS hood!

as i measured, with a summit DROP BASE air cleaner (the spacer ring must remain on) you CAN fit up to a 3.5" filter. i have a 3" on mine...

i would have prefered the flat base, but i only did the mod because my friend had a free base and top and a 14"x3" element is cheaper then a stock replacement...
