built me a dual snorkel ram air box for my TBI

Finally got around to building me a dual snorkel airbox for my '93 over the weekend. Seems to work great so far, and really quieted down that loud hissing noise that was coming from my open element. Here's a couple of pics:

Looks good. What size element are you using inside the air cleaner asm ? One thing I don't like about using aluminum ducting is it's ability to absorb heat fron the engine bay. I know it wouldn't look as nice but, a little insulation might go a long way to getting the coolest air possible to the tbi.

Go Vols!!

I agree. Some header wrap would probably do the trick (they make black spray paint for it...). Then you'd have insulated good looking air intake tract. Just a thought.

Looks good. Inexpensive and clean, just the way it should be.
It's true that the plastic will insolate better than the aluminum but it's up to you, worth the extra 1% hp?

Thanks guys.
It was pretty simple to do. A buddy had some 1/16 inch sheetmetal laying around, so we cut a 4" wide strip, wrapped it around the 14" filter I had, marked it, cut to that length, then used a 3" hole saw to cut out the snorkel holes, cut a piece of 3"x6" exhaust tubing I picked up at AutoZone into snorkels, then welded it all together. Spray-canned it a nice wrinkle black finish. Went to Home Depot and bought a couple of 3" dryer vent hoses for, I think, $8, and zip-tied them to the snorkels.
Came out so good, my buddy's thinking about making some more.
Yes, I'm sure insulating the hoses would cut down on the heat, but to be honest, I really just wanted to reduce the damn hissing/injector noise that the open element created. It's SO much quieter now; I can even hear a small header leak that I need to repair
Later, SC

I never did like the sponge lids. I had one and got rid of it for that reason (hissing). I mean yeah it's a cool idea but, it's overkill if your TB or carb is the main restriction.

By the way, you have inspired me to chop up my existing air filter housing. LOL.

looks awsome, I'm gonna go build me one!
One question, where do you have the two intakes' ends?
I was thinking of either dropping them all the way down to my front grille or dropping them to the wheel wells.

did he fabricate that as a dropped filter housing? doesn't look like it but, I figured I'b ask. so far from what I've learned about ultimate TBI mods, It looks like creating dual ram will not work as well with a dropped air cleaner housing. So before I go and chop mine all to hell I figured i'd ask. would you recommend using dropped housing for a dual ram mod? My own common sense says yes it'll work but no I wouldn't recommend it because it'll cause a restriction. Second question. If you would recommend an level-based housing...do you think your guy could make me one? throw it up to him and let me know. Don't worry I'll pay shipping if he says yes. PM me please.

I'm not an airflow expert regarding the dropped-base vs. flat-based airflow question. The base I have on my '93 is the flat base that came with the Edelbrock aircleaner. It doesn't matter if it's dropped or flat regarding the "air box" - it simply sits between the base and lid...whether flat or dropped base.
Since we built this one, I have had several requests from friends and online to build some more. We're going to build 5 more of the 14"x4" ones like on my '93. We've had a couple of requests to build some 14"x3", and 10"x4", as well as requests to put the snorkels at different angles.
If you knew what size you needed and let me know, then yes, we can get it built.
If you want to email me directly, do so at:

Still, the question remains, what size filter are you using, because if you have the 14" filter that came with your lids, with the sheetmetal surrounding it... that would be choking the engine... and air would enter only at the 2 point were the snorkels are.

I once had custom scoop on a formula car, with aluminum hose connected to the MAF... it actually cracked from the vibration and I was losing the ram effect....so I had to replace the tubing with some big diameter rubber hose. what other type of hose you guys have come up with? I don't know if hose for a clothes dryer (some kind of plastic) can withstand the heat under inside an engine compartment...

Thunderboy, you read my mind. That is exactly what I was thinking. I was just waiting for super chevy to say what filter he was using before making the same comment you did. Still it's a nice looking set up.

Where do the dryer ducts terminate? In the grill or 2nd head light hole? Can you post a picture of the front of your truck showing where the air enters the system?
Thanks,

It's a 14" x 4" filter.
Choking the engine?
I don't think so. It's the 2 barrel tbi doing that.
Like I said, it runs fine. I don't think it's any faster or slower than before, but, it's my 30,000-mile-a-year work truck, so I'm not exactly turning times to get the last bit of hp out of it. If I want to go fast, I'll drive my '68.
I guess you could have a filter(s) at the point where the hose ends grab the air, or do like my racer buds and go without filters, but I'm not interested in that. I just have the hose ends run to a couple of open spaces in the rad support. I just wanted something that's functional, quiet and looks good.

I tend to agree that it wouldn't choke the engine. Here's my theory: If the throttle bores are 1 11/16" each, that means each bore would be _theoretically_ fed with one of the 3" hose openings. About the only drawback I see is the filter getting pretty dirty right where the hoses connect, but that's only a minor inconvenience to turn the filter element every couple months.
Nice workmanship on your project, though. Looks muy better than the factory set up. I dumped my air silencer box for a piece of rigid aluminum dryer vent.

Cheers, Tim sends

my buddy made a ram air hood out of dryer vents once. you know the sloped aluminum ducting that you usually put on the outside of the house to push the steam downward?! well that's what he used. 2 of them right ontop of the hood. They shoved the air into the 3" aluminum dryer tubes. I asked him if he was going to start using fabric softener sheets for the breather element. Keep your engine parts feeling nice n soft without no static cling.

those are three inch openings obstructed by airfilter element so its nowhere near 3 inches in actual airflow area.

I would have done something to allow more of the airfilter to see the incoming air, preferebly the outer wall away from the filter all the way around.

But hey its a work truck and it probably works allright for what it is

Dont think I know a Hale spelled that way. Definitely not a Stager. Its been 13 years since high school. I dont know anyone in Yukon any more. Mostly, I just hang out with family.

I actually went to Westmoores' first prom I dont even remember the girls name though I think it was Kim somethin. I used to know a lot of people from Moore. One was named Kari but I dont remember her last name, she was a hotty if I recall. The other was a chick named Janie Imo. I actually dated her once. Oh and Michelle Engle I dated here too. Its been 13 years since high school. I dont know anyone in Yukon any more. Mostly, I just hang out with family.

But seriously man, if you need anyone to help work on your car, let me know, I would be glad to help out, I dont have a whole lot of knowledge, but I can turn a wrench.

BACK ON THE SUBJECT!!!

I just acquired a Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner housing. It came without the ducting. I am thinking of doing some kind of RAM Air setup into the Dual Snorkels. If Anyone has done something like this I would appreciate PICs.

I found something that looked interesting at Hawks Thirdgenparts Here's the link http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/in...il?v=1&pid=779

This was designed for TPI and but I believe that it could be made to work with TBI. What do you guys think? Has anyone done it?

I am pretty sure I could build something like this but I need to figure out how to mount it.

Thanks for your help on this one!

There is something very similar that has been done for TBI, I think it was in the Tech Section, or possibly this forum.

I just acquired a Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner housing. It came without the ducting. I am thinking of doing some kind of RAM Air setup into the Dual Snorkels. If Anyone has done something like this I would appreciate PICs.
!
...scroll up man....take a look....read what he said....3" duct tube for dryer ventilation. You can get it from home depot.

I got that part. In fact I walked all around Home Depot AND Lowes this evening looking and getting Ideas. By RAM Air I was looking at things that others have done that created an air collector in front of the radiator. I know it shows up elsewhere in another thread but being a newer post I thought this one was likely to bring new input... I Was hoping to get some photos that showed HOW THe in front of the radiator airbox was MOUNTED

:hail: Thanks for YOUR help!
