Shoot me, or the car, or both.

I went to the track last night.

2.2 60'
15.9@85mph

*Thinks*

Alright, I have narrowed my problem(s) down to two things.

1. Car has absolutly nothing off the line. I think my idiot friend gave me a poor converter. I ordered a 4.3 V6 S10 converter from my local tranny shop for $60. Should be in Monday.

2. The TBI in general, I didn't like it when I got the car, but I hate carbs even less. I guess you can say I am a reformed riceboy, cause I LOVE fuel injections. I grew up working on FI cars at my dad's shop. I have a mostly ready TPI thats gonna go in. I have not run with WinALDL, and I probably should to check how the car is running.

Any suggestions I should look into before I get pissed and sell the car?

BTW, when I slam the car off the line, there is no wheel spin. If that is any indication.

Oh yeah, I can only powerbrake to 1500 without wheelspin. I have problems with my rear disc brakes.

BTW, launching 1400RPM's, no wheelspin, shifting at 4750-5000. (700R4)

I was the slowest auto there that was burning second.

15.9 is way slow for your motor, size-wise anyway.
Can you give a run down of the motor? I see it has and LT4 cam and headers, but how about the rest of it? Is it fully computer controlled? Emissions legal?
I kept all the stock stuff (emissions, ac, etc....) on my car when I swaped in a 350 TBI and was able to do best at 13.8.
How about suspension/traction mods?
What is your gas mileage like?
Did you tune the chip at all?

Sorry for all the questions, but need to focus it down a little more-

You have to be able to wring more than that out a 350!

Thanks for replying.

The motor doesn't have much.

LT4 cam
Hedman Headers (1 5/8")
3" Flowmaster and a high-flow resonator.
K&N air filter in stock box.
350 out of a 88 Iroc. (Ran the numbers)

Full computer

Non-Emmissions. Nothing.

Suspension, there is a torque arm bushing, and thats about it. Oh yeah, I have 15X8.5" centerline convos with 265/50/15" BFG Radial GT tires. They do fine. I think even completely stock suspension, the car would have a hard time burning. The power just doesn't feel like its there.

Gas Mileage.....8 in city, 15 going 55-70, 20 or so with 80+.

Stock Chip, throttle body is stock with 350 injectors out of a cop car I believe.

(Edit) Running 87 gas with 8* timing with no knock. Under accelelration, there is no knock. (Hauled *** down a street while watching for knock on my snap-on scanner.

Yeah custom tuning would help out alot. I have the cop car caprice computer in mine and it made a huge difference , I also hear you should change the knock sensor and esc module to a 350 unit.

Have you tried playing with your timing, I would retard it a little if I were you , just retard it in small increments and drive it each time. It cant hurt to try. Also does it run well, like it idles fine and sounds good , no misses or funny sounds.

Seems the car runs best where I have it. I played with the timing a few weeks ago and it feels best here.

Idles fine, sounds good most of the time. I am going to check for knock next time I have a day off. (I dont have the scanner, or the car here.)

That fuel mileage seems pretty low. Have you ever logged some data with WinALDL? It might give you a better handle on your fuel and spark tables. 8/15 mpg isn't right. You are probably leaving a lot of performance and economy on the table.
The caprice chip is a good start- but that will need refinement.
It sounds like you have the right parts on there, just need some tuning-

If you have a LT4 cam, different Torque convert, exhaust, etc YOU NEED A CUSTOM CHIP!!!!!

Don't do anything else to you tune your vehicle.

Its like throwing any old carb on a 454 and complaining it isn't running right. You have to tune.

That being said, I think your car is too much for a stock TBI. Its time to think about a commander 950 4bbl system, Stealthram, or a Carb.

*Looks at Tune Port System in shop*

I was told that the LT4 cam is computer friendly. You might be thinking of the LT4 HOT cam. (Alot of people think I got a huge cam, when its actually mild.)

Also, I dont have the means to tune it. Not many shops will even touch it. (Although I do all my own work, including the gears.)

I'm also thinking the stock fuel pump isn't good enough.

-edit- Just to give you guys a idea of this car. I beat a 15.7 truck on the street by bus lenghts, and a slightly modded 03 SE-R by 3 cars. I thought the car was slowing down cause I was getting used to it. Maybe it really was slowing down....

Dennis is absolutely right

and as far as "computer friendly" goes, mods of anykind are not computer friendly. You are changing the characteristics of the motor without telling the ecm anything. It still thinks its running a 305. The only thing the ecm can really adapt for is part throttle fuel mixture and even then it cant adapt a whole lot at all.

btw on the street, general rule of thumb, either their car is two seconds faster than what they say it runs, or its two seconds slower. Its only the former when money is involved.

Yeah, I loved how when I went to the nationals, everyone's car was stock. I said "There are more stock cars here than at a dealership."

I was the only person who admitted to actually having mods.

Although no one wanted to run me.

Alright, I hooked up my snap on scanner to it, and at wide open, the car runs at 950mV. At idle, its running at 600-800mV. Too rich, I swapped my 305 injectors back, now its running too lean. (Car has lean miss.)

Maybe its time for a bigger throttle body with 350 injectors maybe the increase in air flow will even out the mixture. Unless you already have a 670 throttle body . Good luck

You really want to go fast? Holley 950 TBI. Get a cheap 100 dollar laptop off ebay to modify it. Then you will have a custom chip and proper air flow.
