open air cleaner on a TBI

Thanks for the help guys. I have a 89 rs convertible with a 5.0 305 TBI. I'm about to put a 3" cowl hood on her and want to run an open air cleaner. I'm not used to workingond CPU controlled cars. I deal mainly with 2nd gen camaros. Is there anything I have to do the
CPU or anything else? Will it run right? Thanks and have a good one my friends.

all you need to do is plug the vacuum port on the tbi for the thermac crap and move the intake air temperature sensor to the firewall. Its the two pin sensor thats screwed into the aircleaner. Thats about it.

Yup, these guys are right. And if you don't want to relocate yout IAT you can just pop it into the bottom of your open element by drilling a .5" hole or so. That is what I did and it works fine. Go buy a pack of vacuum caps and pick one out that will fit over the thermac port. Total investment for this is like 20 to 25 bucks. Maybe cheaper. You will love the results and your car will thank you.

i agree.

but, you may want to get a new IAT sensor while you are at it. its only like 7 bucks, and its worth it while you have it out.

you may or may not feel anything when driving, but you will DEFINITELY be able to hear the difference.

have fun...

need clarification

Hey, guys thanks for your help. I would like to pick up a new sensor for this appliction. I have gone to both Kragen Auto parts and napa auto and niether one can figure out what a IAT sensor is, so I just wanted to clarify with you. They both kept talking about hte manifold air temp sensor and the air cleaner temp sensor. I am almost positive that I am looking for the air cleaner temp sensor, correct? Just wanted to double check. They run $20 in my part of the woods. Is there anything else I should do? Any other sensors that should be replaced, even if it's a just-in-case replacement? I was planning on replaceing the ingnition wires (got the accell 8.8mm), HEI cap, and plugs since I bought it used. anyone have any ideas on a good straight forward HEI replacement cap? Would a better coil helps these engines out at all? Okay the questions just seem to keep growing. Enough for now. Thanks and have a good one my friends!!

Here is the GM part number for it 8997787. it is refered to as the Air Temp Sensor. You can find it on www.gmpartsdirect.com. I think it is cheaper at a parts store.

thoes air temp sensors rarely fail...... you dont need a replacement.

just keep it someplace that isnt excessivly hot in the engine bay.... for example, dont hang it over the headers/manifold..... and dont let it touch hot metal...

i would suggest putting it in the air cleaner housing if you can. otherwise, on the firewall over the engine is fine.

watch out

if your getting a cowl hood try not to get a bolt on... i had four pins on mine and it flew off on the freeway so if you get fiberglass pin on make sure to use at least 6 pins

Had to be some kind of coicindence or something, I JUST got done bringing an old thread about open elements I started when I first joined TGO! You may want to check it out. There is a LOT of info in it and some MAJOR things your gonna want to heed caution to, also. If you have any other Q's let me know (pm me or something) and I'll be more than happy to help ya!
