Advancing Timing??

The mods for my car are in my sig. I was thinking of advancing the timing some. How much should I do it?? I don't mind running higher octane gas.

Start with 2 degrees and take it for a drive. Then try 4 degrees and so on. Mine likes 6 degrees. Different cars respond to this differently though. Try that and see what happens.

find a way to datalog so you can see knock counts.

my car runs great all day at 6*, at 7* or 8* it knocks pretty badly. it is just a matter of finding that sweet spot, but to do that it really helps to be able to see the knock.

mine liked 6* advance but when i added some 1.6 rockers i bumped it up to 8*.

My car likes 4*. I had a bit of knock at 6 so I backed it down.

mine is at 10 deg. picked up KC at 30 map 2400-2800 rpms so removed timing 2 deg there. went away. now some popped up in higher map (80) and will remove timing there if it happens again. how can one determine if it is real knock or false from other mechanical noises?

Just a guess, if you pull timing out in the areas that knocks are recorded and you don't lose but gain some performance, then I would say that it was real knock. If you can't take enough timing out to stop the knock then there is a good chance it's mechanical. But WDIK.

this may sound stupid but by seat of the pants can you feel 6 deg timing pulled and the lesser performance that results? If on dyno or track that is another matter. if it is real knock and not mechanical noise and if the KC goes away after pulling timing would that not indicate real knock? that is if mechanical noise changing timing would have no effect and the sensor would still register KC. the fact mine went away might suggest timing/fuel lean as culprit. make sense?
