Cant remember if i read it off a post or it was ultimate tbi that i remember it from but was over talking with my dad the other day and was liek hey we put a ram air setup on the suburban gave the blazer the suburban lid and filter cause its huge wheres the blazer lid and filter? He swore it would be to wide and wouldnt work but sure as hell it did and gave me a pretty noticeble difference in zoom zoom. Heres the comparison pics
I cant say i will smoke vettes or nothin but it is a big improvement over stock. He's got a moroso open air element he had on the old truck that i may try for a week or so. When the weather clears up here i'm going to run a few with the gtech and the stock air setup then with the truck lid and filter and then the open one to see what we get. working out a way to make a dual snorkel setup for her.
Definately suggest doing this one

hey what year did that blazer(suburban?) lid come off of?
did it just switch out and fit? didn't even have to move the tbi spacer ring?
do you happen to know how big that filter is?
thanks

That looks like a great improvement but you still hve to deal with the tiny tube in the air cleaner base. So was that tall filter and top out of the blazer or suburban? I am not sure if I followed your first post right.

ok i went ahead and went to the junkyard today.
i got mine off an old buick, but they're VERY common out there, i found at LEAST 5 of them, they're common lids even though they have many different bottoms...
...I also found an 84 camaro with the same kind of single snorkle intake, except that the part thats attached above the lights is about twice as big, so I grabbed that too.
10 bucks for both parts, which isn't bad, but considering I went there two weeks ago and got a jack and all accessories for my car for 2 bucks, I was a little "upset".
the lid fit perfectly, except the part where the nut screws in is almost non-existant now, I had to push down the lid with my hand to get the nut to screw in just about two turns.
I also tested to see if the snorkle would fit, and it seems to, but I'm not positive that the hood will close yet, I'll get back to you on that...
I headed to autozone and got a fram (CA326 I believe) which fits on a 1990 blazer with a 350 tbi filter for the car and it fit perfectly.
Now I haven't gotten the chance to floor it and run it to anything higher then 3k yet, so I don't really know how much difference there is, and I don't know if this is the placebo effect(of if its the fact that I just replaced a pretty old filter), but I DO believe I noticed a decent difference in the way she runs...
I dunno, it can't hurt anyway.
for those of you who bother to try this, look around for one of our tbi lids in the junkyard first and carry it around until you find one that looks like the bigger one, then compare to make sure you have the right size, thats what I did.
anyway, thanks for the idea.

It would be neat to see some track times from before and after.

sorry, if that wasn't clear enough, the 1" higher lid DOES fit, and the hood WILL close on it...
...its the snorkel* that I'm not sure if it'll fit yet or not...
oh, and by the way, can I replace the little rod that the nut screws onto? I'd imagine that the one that came on that blazer would work, and since it's a tbi it should fit in ours perfectly...
..how would I go about changing that out though? I went back and tried grabbing a couple off of those cars that had those lids, but they don't just pull out, and I have no idea if they unscrew or what, could someone help me out here?

Wow another one of my threads back from the dead lol. That was a while ago and although it did improve performance a bit for basically little to no cost you cant beat the full open elemten which i have on mine now. Got a 14*3 open element with a k+n from summit for liek 5o bucks

Try to unscrew your stock stud a bit. They just screw in but sometimes you have to unplug the injectors to get them out of the way while you unscrew it. You can get a little more height on the stud this way.Originally posted by FreeLoader

I disagree!
I think if you decide to make a cold air intake using the original base from the tbi, it's a beautiful addition, and being as that's what I intend to do, w00t to that, heh.

Yea we tried the taller one form the blazer but it was liek a fine thread where as mine was a coarse threaded stud. I believe its been awhile now. I think i jsut took some of that all thread and bent it to the shape of the original jsut a tad longer though. But i think i remeber the truck studs did not thread into it.Originally posted by FreeLoader

thanks shifty, I'll give that a try.

oh, and next time I go to the track, I'll bring both lids.
I might have a cold air intake by then, but there still should be a noticable difference between the lid and filter.
SHOULD BE, heh.

I've used this breather for years and it works well. I'm just now cleaning the K&N after 4 years or so.
And.....it flows well. Just arrived home from work and had it to 135 and still pulling. Wooha!!

did they change the serpentine setup in 91 or something?Originally posted by DM91RS

or do your modifications have something to do with it?
I dunno, my alternator is on the opposite side.
you don't seem to have ac either, but I dunno, I've seen ones without ac that didn't look like that at all...I'm all confused and stuff.

btw i tried the snorkel, it fits...not a real big difference though, not that I've seen anyway.
again, I still haven't gotten it over 3k rpm, and I just unplugged the battery yesterday, so the computer still has to get back up to speed.

The numbers '305' are about the only thing our LO3's and his engine has in common....Originally posted by DM91RS

The stock a/c, alt., and air pump set-up are long gone. I fabricate my own parts so that's why you don't see the same thing as others with factory a/c delete.Originally posted by FreeLoader

Soon it will return to stock with only smog pump delete........getting too old for no a/c.

ah, it all makes sense now....
and ya, you practically only have the same BLOCK at this point, heh.

Yep...short block is what came with the car in 1991

I'm not sure if anyone cares at htis point, but my computer is back up to speed, and my car is pulling harder then it ever has before, and at much higher speeds.
this IS of course a stock 305, but still, the new snorkel and air filter lid DEFINITELY made a difference, I just thought you guys should know.

sorry to bring a post back from the dead, but what is an open element and was it better then the thing that freeloader did?
also, im not really sure i understand everything that freeloader did... did you just get a new lid and filter?

the best way I can describe an open element is that its the air filter setup where you just have the circular filter, with a chrom and/or black top and bottom.
and unless you followed up with a fully fabricated ram/cold air intake setup on top of the bigger air filter, the open element will be better.
actually, some airflow tests have shown that having the smaller air filter increases pressure inside of the filter box and actually flows more air.
I don't know much more then that about it because honestly I don't believe it, being as my personal experience has shown me otherwise.

wow a year old, i will say even though the taller filter and lid was an improvement its nothing compared to a open element...ad a huge cowl hood and a bigger filter (running a 4" now) and you get some cooler air adn wow

Did you make your cowl functional or does it make a difference just because it helps the engine cool down? I'll be getting a cowl hood in a few months but it won't come with everything on the hood for it to be function and I was going to eventually have someone add some fiberglass to the bottom to make it so. If it helps enough without it thats less money spent. Originally posted by irocbirdbuilder

if you buy an open element would be much better. Go to your local autoparts or summitracing.com and order 1 from them. They can be had for 30 bucks with the filter, look better and function better.
