Crate engine times?
I am think about buying a crate engine for my RS. I saw this auction on ebay and it seems to be a pretty good deal. I am not looking to do this anytime soon but im looking to get some feedback on it ahead of time. What kind of time should i expect to see with this setup? Also on the auction it says it for 85 and earlier, will it still work with my 91. heres the link:

you could get a brand new L05 roller engine (centerbolt heads, 1 piece rear main seal) for 1550 from sdpc2000.com or paceparts.com, throw in a new camshaft and intake and probably make more hp and be happier than if you bought the rebuilt one off ebay, and problem end up spending less. Just my opinion.

Check this out:
http://www.goautocenter.com/300hp_tpi_1987-89.htm
It's a NEW engine that makes almost as much power for about the same price. And it has a roller cam, one piece rear main seal, center bolt valve covers, and passenger side dipstick. On the other hand, it is only a 2-bolt main engine, and doesn't include an intake manifold.
Personally, I like the idea that it isn't a step back in technology, and it "looks" right in '87 and later F-bodies.
This is what I will probably have one of these days.
But it's just a thought...

you can even save more money if you buy the crate motor i mentioned above (same engine as the one from goautocenter.com) and put the comp cams camshaft in yourself and save about $150.

Or you can get an L98 shortblock from sdpc2000.com for $1135 and have a choice of cam AND heads. Granted, it won't be cheaper, but you generally get what you pay for...if you're careful...and lucky...

the L05 has a strong bottom end, go on paceparts.com and look at the specs. Hypereutectic pistons, powdered metal rods, 1 piece rear main, roller setup, high volume oil pump, GM single roller timing chain, 9.6:1 compression ratio. The cam and the heads suck but you cant bet that price for everything that you get, even comes with oil pan, valve covers, timing chain cover and harmonic balancer.

OK, there it is - Pace has a more detailed description. And I will agree that this engine would be a solid base for a street performance engine, would be a noticeable improvement over (I'm assuming) an LO3, and the price is right. My initial thought was simply that the engine from goautocenter.com was a pre-assembled engine rated at a fairly similar HP with all the later model updates. And from what I've seen and heard, changing parts on a pre-assembled engine normally voids the warranty.
To answer the original question, your ET with that HP level depends on a few different factors, including (but not limited to), vehicle weight, gear ratio, transmission, traction, etc. Having said that, I'd guesstimate you could get solidly into the 14s, maybe faster depending on other modifications. If I'm way off, I hope someone will correct me. Hope this helps...

Exactly right, but you forgot the most important part, TUNING. Ive seen cars with all kind of mods that run slower than me all because of tuning problems.
