Hissing/Sucking sound

Recently I installed an open element just to trash the ugly stock one. There was no sensor connected to the stock air filter assembly, this may be irrelevant. Sometimes, mainly when the car is cold, I get a hissing/sucking sound, this also sometimes happens when I get on the gas. I plugged the vacuum line with a pencil and removed the spacer on the intake. Any ideas to what this hissing sound may be? I'm guessing that I'm just hearing the throttle opening up.

yeah, thats all it is, you are hearing the engine sucking in air. Alot easier to hear with an open element.

close you mouth and plug one nostril and breath. Then open you mouth as wide as you can and breath...Notice the sound difference? Yeah thats kinda the difference between our awesomely designed stock TBI intakes and the open element.

The stock air box does alot to silence that. Most of the hissing is the air rushing past the IAC at cold start and when the throttle is applied. The stock airbox is a decent match to a stock tbi engine. Doesnt need much air and is pretty well met by a single snorkleIf you dont like the noise you can always put it back on. My friend ran one of those on a ZZ4 with a modded Q-Jet and was able to get some decent numbers out of it, although teh dual snorkle worked much better.

Intakes are designed from the factory to quiet the flow of the incoming air. Anyone see the intake for a 5.3L vortec truck engine? You know how they have that huge horn shaped chunk of plastic coming off of the intake ducting? Well, that chunk is there to muffle the sound of rushing air. Personally, i dont like it. I rather enjoy the sound of my car sucking in air... :lala:

yup. like they said.. its the air sucking in.

the first performance motor i ever built was a 400sbc that i poured every penny my high school butt could earn.

sound wise, i got more of a thrill out of hearing the 2ndarys open and suck in the air, then the exhaust note..... to this day that suck-whoosh that happens when you snap the 2ndarys open gets me giddy.

its probly the intake. im saying that for 2 reasons.

1. thats what he just changed... and it is ALOT louder when you do that....

2. mine does it and it has brand new injectors.... everyone i know, regardless of induction that has a open element has that sound. carbstyle multipoint EFI, carb, and TBI with open elements make that sound.

the injectors are more of a tick anyway... not a sucking sound.

im just using a no name, chrome push in breather that i got from the "cheap chrome stuff" isle in my local auto store..

any "standard" push in breather will work.. justpull the tube out and shove it in. if you want to have it look somewhat stock, get a barbed fitting, and a pipe or adapter that just slips into the valve cover hole.

stick some PCV/Fuel (not vac line, not regular rubber line) hose on the barb, and knock out the hole under the open element... put a 2nd fitting on there, and connect the hose.

if you do it nice, it can look somewhat stock, and is pretty small... instead of getting the filtered air from its own filter, it gets filtered by the engine filter... like the stock setup.

but i think thats alot of work for nothing.. i got the $6 one and im happy with it :lala:

I couldn't get any of the off the shelf stuff to work. Then again I haven't tried that hard. I am using the ghetto rigged stock piece with some filter element rubber banded around it.... haha. Anyways the neck is 3/4" if that helps you pick one out.

just a regular plain old generic valve cover breather.

its just a push in breather.

you pull out the tube

you push in the breather.

heres a pic of the first similar style valve cover breather that i could find on a Google image search

That looks pretty good. Now that my AIR is out of the way and my heater valve delete will be around the corner I will actually have room to put a breather. Before it was to cramped and would not allow and breather with a larger than 2" diameter to fit.

as you can see in the pic, i have all that stuff, and mine fit.

you just have to wiggle everything out of the way first.
