questions bout lt1 cam on tbi 305

i dont know if this is the right thread for this board. please move it if its not.

i was just wondering how much power a lt1 cam, 650 double pumper, carb manifold, and distributer would give my 305 currently tbi? like how much shoulld i expect?

that and what other cheaper mods can i do to get more power? i already have an open element, bypassed smog pump, and a/c and muffler, i plan on puttin in a cut out. who makes a pull type cut out i can pull from inside the car? all i've found is bolt covers

thanks for any replies

only about 8 more horsepower until you get headers... don't even attempt a cam swap until you've got headers, yuck. I'd hate to bolt those nasty things back onto the heads.

If i were you i would wait on the cam. First you need to open your exhaust. You said you have a muffler, so now you need a catback and hedders. Call your local muffler shop and see how much they will charge to custom make you a 3' exhaust. the shop here only charges 77 dollars, so it wont be too steep, And if your looking for extra power, this is what you need, the difference is amazing plus it produces and awesome sound. Then do your hedders and cat. I bought my hedders through hedman for 150.00$. then you will be ready for your cam and intake. And as for the carb, i would keep your throttle body, look at the tech article for some free mods. And last but definatley not least, your rear end, i have heard of people switching from stock 2.73 gears to 3.42 and gaining 6 tenths of a second.

its got cat back but stock piping, which is why i want to put a cut out after the headers i will be getting, i was thinking should i just weld on fake air tubes to the headers? to pass emissions? or should i just register it out of the emissions area and not even worry, so what am i looking at total horse with a cutout, headers, cam, carb, manifold and distributer?

i also have been getting terrrrrrrriible gas mileage lately. that and it smells like gas at an idle? i was thinking my fuel pressure is up to high? or i dont even know. should i just keep the tbi with a tbi spacer, and injector spacer? im wanted to go witht he carb so i can run some nitrous...

any suggestions would be grand

Fix whatever gas smell problem you have and keep the tbi. You can run nitrous with tbi.

I thinking maybe...... anywhere from 20-50 horsepower, just depends on how good you are in tune. When you go doing mods like this you are going to need to get a custom chip burned.

If he's going with a carb chip tune won't be necessary! The computer would be taken out

Don't switch to carb just yet. You will hate yourself for it when you lose all of the drivability that TBI brings to the table. Like the others said you need to upgrade your exahust from the headers back. You need full 2.5 or 3" exhaust to fully support any cam swap in a 305. Stock piping will not do and will restrict the power you make drastically. I would just flip through summit or jegs and pick o7ut a nice cat back, high flow cat, and header set-up. Most are 3" and are the way you need to go. A search in this board will take you a long way and get mnay of your questions answered about entry level performance mods. I would not even consider a cam swap until you ave done everything else to your car to prepare for it.
