replace engine
dont know depends on what needs replacing like wiring connector and the such. labor usually starts around $50-90 per hour. they will probably end up removing the transmission since its ez'r to remove the engine that way, especially if it goes on a lift. just get an (rent, borrow) engine hoist and change it yourself, save the $ for future mods. your just changing over to a newer engine not swaping out a V6 for a V8. my geuss would a few thousand, but not knowing the going hourly rate at that dealership it'd be way off. IIRC a new 5.0L is close to the same price as a 5.7L i gave $500 for a used TBI 5.0L and i know i can get a new 5.7 for about $1000-1500.

look at www.paceparts.com for the 92-93 350 caprice motor, it is actually cheaper than a 305, its $1547 brand new. It basically just a bigger version of the L03, not a performance engine but has more power than the L03 and alot more potential.

It is going to cost you a fortune. I would use that money to buy a 350 and find someone that can do it for you. You will pay soooooo much to swap a motor in that is worth only a few hundred bucks.

The price I got for a 305-350 swap was $1000 for labor if I provide the mounts and sensors, which would run you about another $200 or so.
Since the labor is essentially the same, I would think it would be the same price. But if I were you, I would just go ahead an put in a new 350, since the prices aren't very different, and there's more potential in a 350 in the long run.
Here ya go:
http://www.goautocenter.com/350_tbi_1987-9.htm
or my personnel favorite:
http://www.goautocenter.com/300hp_tpi_1987-89.htm
(get this one w/ the TBI cam)
and for comparisons sake, here's the 305:
http://www.goautocenter.com/305_v-8.htm
(but it's for pre 87, so remember that)
I hope that helps.

all those goautocenter engines are just L05 caprice engines with better camshafts and they charge over $400 more. It would be cheaper to just buy your own cam and install it.

how long is the warrenty, cause on the page it says that a 2 year warrenty can be purchased. Is there another warrenty that is offered with the motor for free?

For $295, one can purchase a 24,000 / 24 month parts and labor warrenty through an outside company, but the install must be done by an ASE certified mechanic.

Maybe I am missing something. Anyways, you would have to be an all out pro who swaps engine for a living to do it that fast. Supreme Member

i think you could swap a carbed motor out of an old muscle car in that time. Just unbolt the motor mounts, bellhousing bolts, torque converter bolts, and lift that bad boy out. or take the tranny with it.

well i am glad we dont use online mitchell, the engine replacement is pretty straight forward if you can remember were everything goes. most time consuming part is transfering parts, i would suggest a set of manifold speaders when installing the exhaust. good luck, e-mail me if you have problems or questions

when you remaove the exhaust manifolds they shrink and will not align with the bolt holes on the heads, they spread the flanges and helt align them, may get luck and not have to use them, i never have been

Gotcha...learn somthin new every day. My manifolds spread into 2 pieces when I took them off. They had more crack in them than harlem. So I could see how you would have problems with them shrinking.

I was glad to see I wasn't the only one stumped by that one.
