throttle lag w/ grinding noise

Hey guys, I currently own a 1991 RS Camaro with an L03 and an automatic transmission, and am noticing a grinding-like noise when I push down lightly on the throttle accompanied with a tremendous lag in actual acceleration. It's kind of hard to describe, but it feels sometimes as if the car itself sort of "lags" when the accelerator is pressed while cruising at 25 mph or so. I really do not know what's going on, and I know its not normal cuz my dad's 89 l98 IROCZ and my cousins L03 89 RS do not act like this. Any help would be appreciated, I know I suck at artiuclating what I intend to say, so sorry for this lame/weak description.

How many miles are on the car? Does the car smoke? When was the last time it had a tune-up? We should be able to help yea out with a little more info.

82004 miles, I haven't had the chance to take it in for a tune up yet. Smoke does exit from the exhaust but only sometimes. thx shifty.

There's no need to take it in for a tune up. You can do one in your driveway in like 1 1/2 hours, and get MUCH better parts for WAY less money.

However, I can't make a connection between a "grinding noise" and lack of having a tune up. girgling, popping yes. . . grinding no.

My first guess is a torque converter, but that's kind of shooting from the hip Eastwood style given the limited info.

Don't worry man it is all about learning . Does the sound increase with rpm? Or does it only do it at certain times?

after accelerator is pressed for about half a second, grinding noise goes away and car accelerates. its as if it has to grind for a littlewhile, and then catch or something then it starts moving. thx for the help tho!

It sounds kind of like your torque converter is not engaging, but I'm no expert, so maybe somebody else can chime in on this.

Sounds like a sloppy downshift. Take it to a tranny place and ask them to look at it. They can usually tell ya if its tranny related.(Take it to a reputable shop).
