high knock counts
like the topic says, I've got really high knock counts. when the motor is cool winaldl says they're between 2 and 9, depends how high the engine is reving, and what kind of load its under. once is approches 195* though they start going through the roof. Like they're peaking over 200. usually around 170 at idle. I just started playing with my base timing and have it set at 0*. Any ideas on how to fix the high knock counts? and is this hurting performance? from what I've read knock counts suck out timing in the chip which hurts performance. I'm throwing an O2 sensor code.
would a cooler t-stat help, i'll prolly get a 180 or 170* one soon and see if the engine knocks less at a lower temp.

Do u have a table to attach. I would think that all the knock counts would definitley effect performance cuz the ecm would retard the timing until the knock sensor stops hearing knock. What was your timing originally set to, and did u experience less knock when u set the timing back down to 0?
Can u hear any engine noise such as an exhaust leak, or any audible pinging?
Are u running lean?

Fianlly someon going through the same problem I am.. I have also had that many counts at 0*. I used to be able to get 2nd gear scratches from the auto before I had to retard base timing to -2* just to get the ping to stop. I have also started getting getting trouble codes for the Oxygen sensor, intake temp and EGR. All this has ocurred since I modified the exhaust. Everything is still there except the air injection into the exhaust manifolds(now headers).
I have tried running seafoam through the motor to clean out any carbon that may have built up, but as soon as I do that and turn the timing back up to 0*, the ping is still there.
I really liked the power I had when the timing was advanced.
Is there any way I could get ping at retarded timing, and I should have timing advanced more? But if that was the case, then it should get better as I go up instead of being bad as I go up to 0*
I would get some tables, but I am using a different kind of program that I havn't figured out how to log the data yet.
I'm working on getting WinALDL to work.

I also am having the same problem. I have done numerous "knock sensor" searches and read for hours, but still not sure what is going on or how to correct it--HELP!!!
I am not into chip tuning, so I can't supply that type of info. I do have a good scanner that when "Timing advance program" is monitered it is showing idle at 29/30*--with slow increase in throttle to 3000/3500 rpm it is showing 36/37 degrees (both stationary and driving), but under more acceleration the indicated timing seems to be dropping to 26/28*. At least I assume that is what it is trying to tell me. Base timing has been set from 0 to 9/10* with same basic results. No codes of any type. See mods below in sig. (not in sig--EGR and air pump deleted--disabled in custom chip.
Couple questions:
CAn a bad knock sensor cure this problem? or just replacing with a new/different brand?
I know there is a number of resaons that can cause "false readings". Any way to isolate what is causing it and how to correct it?
If U have a low knock count (what is low anyway?) how harmful is installing a "cutout toggle switch", so U could make a pass at the strip and then turn it back on?
I would really like to eliminate the problem rather than circumvent it.
Any suggestions?

I'll try to get some tables soon. Which ones exactly do you want?
IIRC, its throwing code 13, straight up Oxygen Sensor. it sends me volt readings at .451 pretty much all the time.
I've got a brand new EGR valve. Although i'm getting an SES light after being on the expressway for about 5 min, seems like EGR again, i'll have to check, it doesnt seem possible.
As far as where im getting them, after the engine heats up, they pretty much stay right around 180, they'll jump up as high as 270 if im accelerating hard when the engine is warm. cold engine, less than 10 counts.
the timing looked to be at about 1-2* advanced before i reset it, prolly just from being run w/o adjusting for 15 years.
I'm not good w/ win aldl and havent started chip tuning yet so you'll have to tell me exactly what you want me to do for those tables, sorry, noob
