idle air control motor
Can anyone post a pic of an idle air control motor for a 305 TBI engine? I was told that I need to pull this off and clean it, but have no idea where to find it etc. I'm new to TBI and smog engines. Thanks for the help and have a great day!

The result would probably be a better running engine. After a while there is a lot of carbon buildup inside the TBI unit. I rebuilt my TBI that had 176,000 miles on it and all of the small passageways and vacuum sources were lined with black crap about 1/8" thick, especially the PCV port.

get carb cleaner.... spray liberally ( a lot) down that passage while the engine is running... take the IAC (idle air controller) out while the tbi is bolted to the engine.. spray it down.. dont soak it or anything just spray it out.... put it back on the car without spinning the shaft or pulling it in and out or anything... your idle might get messed up and youll have to reset your iac, listed in the tech section

1. get carb cleaner at autoparts store.
2. spray down in iac passage (rear/passenger side of tbi) while car is running....
3. repeat daily for 2 days... wait a couple days to see if problem is fixed. then come back and we'll see if you even need to take out the iac to clean it.

You have to be careful with how the IAC is cleaned. Harsh solvents can damage the internals and wash the grease out of the bearing cartrage that is at the rear. Carb cleaner works well to clean out the passages and the area around where the IAC pintle seats. The IAC itself should be disassembled to be cleaned. You can make the ecm eject the pinte by putting it into field service mode (short pins A + B of the ALDL). Just aim the IAC pintle towards somewhere where it wont be able to go very far and once the ECM is in field service, it will fully extend teh IAC and the pintle will shoot out. From there, clean all the carbon build up off of the pintle. Also take a twisted up tip of a paper towel soaked with a gentle solvent and use it to clean the guide for the pintle in the IAC body. Afterward, lightly lubricate the channels and gear teeth/threads or whatever it is on the pintle as well as the guide in the IAC body with a light grease and reassemble. Do so by screwing the IAC pintle back in and when the guide and channel meet, gently rock the pintle back and forth while applying light pressure to get it to go back into the IAC body.
At the car, screw the IAC in untill the pintle touches down on the seat but don't screw the IAC in any farther! You may damage it! Screw it in very carefully by hand so you can feel if it bottoms out. Youll be able to see when the pintle is close to bottoming out by looking at the entrance for the IAC passage on the tb. Youll be able to see the pintle protruding out. Once seated abd reconnected, start the vehicle (make sure youve taken the paperclip out of the ALDL). Itll idle rough so dont worry about that. Run it for 30 secs or so and shut the motor down. The ecm will reset the IAC on shutdown. Remove the IAC and make sure that it has retracted. Screw the IAC back in all the way and again restart the engine. Shut down. The ecm will again reset the IAC to its proper park position and the vehicle is now ready to drive.

The IAC passage (as in one) is located (looking at the engine from the front of the car) towards the back left of the tbi after you take of the aircleaner. It is a liver shaped hole and if you look down into it youll see what looks like a cone on a rod.
when you take the iac out. it stays in the iac unless you shoot it out as said above...
i dont think you have to do this, just clean out the passage and i bet you're fine. IF that doesnt work, take it out and do the cleaning procedure above.
spray the cleaner in while the iac is in.

The hole snflupigus is referring to is to the left top of the tbi if your standing in front of the car facing the engine compartment. Its jsut above one of the main bolts that holds the tbi down.
