Some More Advise Wanted
Hi gang.
Car is an 89 Firebird that now has a L05 350TBI from a Suburban. Head castings are 14102193. I believe these are 76cc. The specs that I found list this as 210hp and 300ft/lbs of torque.
Much to my disappointment, it does not have a roller cam. I could shoot myself for rushing the engine swap job and not going through everything. I did replace the oil pan, valve cover, timing chain, water pump, starter, knock sensor, ESC module, all the throttle body gaskets, the EGR, radiator cap, open element, and quite a few other things.
I did not; however, change the valve stem seals (duh). So now, of course /i get a nice puff of smoke as I start up the car.
There are a couple of things that are troubling me though.
1- The car seems to have an unusal amount of cranking time before it starts.
2 - Even with the IAC cleaned and reset (as per tech article) it still seems to want to hunt for idle at a stop.
3 - I goofed and forgot to take the plug out of the pass head for the coolant fan switch, so I put it in the thermostat housing. Well if I let it, the car gets to around 240º before the fan comes on. (I am forced to turn on the A/C (converted to r134) to make the fan come on around 200º. I changed to a 180º thermo, and on the highway it usually stays around 180º, but in traffic it just keeps heating up.
So, I apologize for this long post, but I am currently saving for a rebuilt trans, this one is not going to make it.
I have installed a high flow cat, and yes it blew through the sniffer with no problems. I have just finished making my regualtor from the 305TBI adjustable, due to go on after I replace the choked up manifolds with some real headers.
My ultimate questions, if I were to get TBI chips to make a prom for me, would that effect my cooling/driveablilty at all?
And would it be beneficial to just port the heads to get more out of them? The max lift I could go for when I do a cam swap is up to .480 (so I am told) to stay emissions friendly.

Here's a pic of the intake that I did. I know, nice wing nut on the air cleaner.
But at least it flow better than stock

the heads are crap and would not be worth porting or polishing, and they are 64cc, not 76cc. Having a custom burned chip will help driveablity and performance but will not do anything for you cooling wise.

hunting for idle is vacuum related I can almost guarantee.
cranking time could be plug gap, any other ignition component, starter or battery.... start checkin.
install a manual fan switch... make life easier... or just move the switch next time you have some spare time to drain the radiator etc.... could fix it, might now. might want to replace the switch with a lower degree turn on when you do it. or again... install a manual one.

You problems can all be related to the stock chip. You need a new prom to make your new combo run effectively. If you cannot do it yourself than www.tbichips.com would be a good start.

Sorry for the confusion on the chip issue, guys. I was thinking about usig the 350 chip, but I was told it was different then the 305 chip, in being that the vehicle was a clutch fan, and was missing some (inputs?) as oppsed to the 305 chip. (not sure if that made sense)
I am more used to doing older engine swaps, (I.E. non computer controlled), so please excuse my ignorance in this, but I do love learning new things all the time.
My many thanks to all who have helped me with their advise. That is why I like this board so much, I am really learning alot here
As far as the chip tuning and all, I am not too sure about all that. I also, don't have a laptop, so I will probably just have to use tbichips.com
