track times

After my intake install there has been a whistling noise coming from the motor and im pretty sure it is the intake manifold. I think the gaskets moved downward and are partially blocking the head ports and i might have a vacuum leak from improper sealing. I think this results in a loss of power because my best MPH was 2 below my best. Best track time was 15.024 @ 89.40 w/ 2.007 60'.
If i fix the intake manifold problem im sure i can run better times because my best before the intake, tranny and torque converter was a 14.791 @ 91.11 w/ 2.068 60'. Im also sure i can get my 60' times in the 1.9xx range because im not yet able to mash the throttle when launching because of traction problems, ill probably invest in some drag radials. I also had a problem with my tach bouncing around between 4-5krpms, it is either a misfiring problem or just the tach acting up.

Well if you have an internal vacuum leak you can't really hear those. Spray some carb cleaner around the base of the intake and look to see if the RPM's bounce or spike. If they do than you have a leak.

i know man, hopefully after reinstalling the intake manifold and installing my new Taylor plug wires it will run alot better. I also gotta figure out what timing to run for the best results. I have no more mods planned for the 167K mile 305, im gonna start saving up for a L05 350 after i rebuild my steering and install a new fuel pump.

Take a pencil and break it into 4 pieces about 2" long each. Put them in the front 2 and rear 2 intake bolts hols and put the gasket over them. You can them put the intake on without the gasket moving. Then put a few bolts in and pull the pencil stubs out. That way you are sure the gaskets stay seated as you slide the intake on.

i finish school in 2 weeks so thats when im going to start checking for leaks and replace the intake gaskets. I know for sure they are blocking the head ports. The first time i installed the gaskets/intake they didnt seal good and i was getting oil in my coolant, so i took off the intake and noticed the gaskets were way off and block some of the intake port on all 8 ports, but i was in a hurry to reinstall the intake so that i could get to the track (2 months ago). Oh well, hoepfully i will have new track times within the next month or two

When I did mine, all I did was put some RTV on the heads first, set the gasket on there, and let it setup for a little while. Everything lined right up. Guess i got lucky.

Yea take that thing out of your way. It comes off with 4 bolts. Anyhoo, I would only use a little RTV around your coolant passages. There is no need for it on any other part of the intake gasket besides a little over lap on the edge of the china wall.
